Twilight Struggle has been one of those board games I’ve heard a lot about but never managed to play (I lack real life friends). So, when I heard that Playdek was making a digital version of the game, I was excited because I would finally have the opportunity to get my hands on the game. While Playdek has had a bit of a bumpy ride recently (with the “slight" disaster that was Unsung Story), the company’s digital products are some of the best around, so they couldn’t have picked a better developer to bring Twilight Struggle to iOS. Now, after quite a long development period, the release day is drawing nearer (though it’s not close, yet). According to the latest Kickstarter update, the game will release for PC/Mac this week, and from there on the developers will be further developing the AI along with focusing on mobile development.
If you’ve never played or heard of the game, Twilight Struggle is an award-winning board game that uses a card-driven system to simulate the Cold War. Your goal is to spread your influence around the world using real historical events. The gameplay mechanics are much-loved but so is the way the mechanics work with the historical theme to bring this very complex historical moment to life. The game will have both AI (of varying levels) and, of course, async multiplayer, and I hope it will be a blast (pun intended) to play one of those two nuclear powers. Stay tuned for more details and a release date.
