If you enjoy your roguelikes with a twist, you might want to keep an eye out for the upcoming Hero Generations Regen, a roguelike/4X game (according to the game’s website) that has you exploring a cute-looking procedurally generated world. Up to here, nothing new. The clever twist in the formula comes in the form of marriage and family. In the game, every step your character takes represents a whole year in his life, and your goal is to survive long enough to find a mate and have a child before you die. If you manage to give the world the gift of your offspring, then once you die, you take control of your child in the world you left behind and continue playing in the hopes of furthering your line.
As you play, you can decide whether to focus on building and crafting the world around you, go on adventures, and so on. The developer hope that Hero Generations Regen will provoke players to consider themes of death, legacy, family, love and more, which is an interesting and lofty ambition. Hero Generations Regen is a remake of the 2011 Hero Generations, but this version has been redesigned and enhanced, so we’ll see if the newer version will solve some of the complaints players of the earlier version had (like the game being too easy). I don’t know when the game will be out, but it shouldn’t be too far off.
