How Much Does the Update to Radiangames’ ‘Devastator’ Improve the Game?

TouchArcade Rating:

There was some contentiousness over my recent review of Devastator ($1.99), the new dual-stick shooter by Radiangames. In particular, I took issue with the game’s difficulty in Hardcore mode. It turns out that the difficulty of Hardcore mode was a glitch, where you had to restart from the last checkpoint instead of at the level you’re on. That’s been fixed in an update out right now.

Does this significantly change my opinion on the game? Not as much as I’d hoped, to be honest. It does feel a lot better now that you can just restart from where you died. It only really affects your score, as every life resets the level anyway. But still, if you’re just trying to progress through the game, you now have the ability to do so without having to trudge back through several difficult levels beforehand.

Devastator still has a few key flaws going for it – I don’t think the “level resets when you die" thing is all that great, the easy mode still seems pointless, and your ability still recharges too slowly for my tastes. It’s still not great, but the update makes Devastator far more palatable, for sure. If the game intrigues you, you’re getting a better experience if you jump in now, and if you dropped it in disgust – maybe give it a second chance?
