Strange Flavour, the developers behind Flick Fishing ($0.99), recently tried and failed with an interesting business model, their “Play Nice" free-to-play system, where there would always be an option to buy out of the system. Now, they’re returning to paid games, and their first game to be paid after the collapse of “Play Nice" is Tiny Trackz ($2.99) – available for $2.99, with no in-app purchases. You’ll be solving puzzles involving railway shunting to form the trains in the proper order that they need to be to get going.
It does kind of feel like going from free to paid is going backwards in time to some extent – perhaps next we could barter some crops for a copy of Strange Flavour’s next game? And at some point, maybe we need to worship the sun in order to perhaps get a copy of one of their games? I kid, but it does show how difficult free-to-play is – as a developer, you have to make a game that gets to millions of players, and then finds a way to make money off of those players. And while I think “pay-to-win" is overly-vilified by indie developers, I do appreciate games that try to truly be free-to-play. But I suppose nice guys finish last, eh?
