“Just make Crossy Road JEEZ!" is sound device for game developers from our own Eli Hodapp. However, you can’t just slap a new name on Crossy Road (Free) and call it a day, you have to actually put your own stamp or interesting twist on the formula. Ironically, that’s exactly what Crossy Road itself did with the tried and true gameplay of Frogger. So if you’re going to iterate on an iteration, it better be pretty good. Mixing Crossy Road with a dungeon crawler isn’t a new idea. The Quest Keeper (Free) did just that earlier this year and it turned out awesome. However, the recently revealed Skeletomb is treading a similar path, but it really looks like it takes things to a whole new level. Watch the trailer and see what I mean.
As you can see, Skeletomb takes a decidedly different approach to Crossy Road + dungeon crawler than The Quest Keeper. Whereas The Quest Keeper uses an auto-walk form of movement, Skeletomb looks like it retains the “move one square at a time" aspect of Frogger and Crossy Road. It also has a much more open world with lots of destructible elements, and the ability to actively attack enemies and destroy parts of the world is very cool. Don’t get me wrong, I love The Quest Keeper to death, but I’m also very excited for the direction that Skeletomb seems to be going in. The game is currently in beta, and if you want more information on how you can be a part of that beta check out the thread in our forums.
