Iain McNeil, of current Wargaming overlords Slitherine, has just announced that Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon releases “Thursday at midnight" for iOS. The game is set in the Second War of Armageddon with the player defending the planet as the Imperium of Man against the mighty Orks. In your struggle, you’ll be joined by three chapters of the legendary Space Marines, the Salamanders, the Blood Angels, and, of course, the Ultramarines. If you aren’t familiar with these events (or if you aren’t familiar with the lore in general), the Second War took place on the Hive World of Armageddon and featured Orks of five different tribes fighting with the imperial Guard and the Space Marines for over twenty years.

The game is, of course, a hex-based, turn-based strategy game that lets players fight in over thirty scenarios, all the while carrying their core force from scenario to scenario. Those troops are able to carry their experience over and also upgrade their weaponry. Slitherine claims that the game includes a complex plot and a branching campaign, which sounds great in theory, but of course it remains to be seen whether those branches actually change the gameplay and the plot substantially. I know we’ve seen more Warhammer games in the last two years than ever before in the history of gaming, but I think this one is a treat for anyone who enjoys strategy games. Slitherine has a proven record by now, and the PC version of the game was well-received, so I’m quite optimistic about this one.
