The fine folks at Butterscotch Shenanigans do a podcast called Coffee with Butterscotch that covers the latest happenings around them and their games. The brothers Sam, Seth, and Adam Coster all have gloriously gravelly voices, so it’s quite the pleasing listen. It’s like your ears are being given a deep massage. And if you think that they’re faking their voices, they’re probably not. I’ve talked to them enough over the years that either they’re really committed to the bit or they were just blessed with these glorious voices. If the indie game thing doesn’t work out, they need to become sports play-by-play announcers. We’ve suffered under the tyranny of Kenny Albert for too long!
Their latest podcast covers two very important topics: one, Sam is done with his strenuous cheomtherapy and stem cell transplant to defeat lymphoma. And after suffering for a few weeks through the tough treatment which also involved eating a bunch of ice, he’s in the clear. But in news that’s relevant to mobile games, Butterscotch is working on a cool mod system for Crashlands. They’ve been developing a campaign creator system tied to the Bscotch ID system, will let you log in to a site that lets you create your own stories in Crashlands. You can make characters, give them dialogue, customize them, and even create boss fights with custom rules and moves. You can build outposts with custom maps, and they say “You could make Zelda inside Crashlands," that’s how customizable this system aims to be. There’s no plan to add things like new races of creatures at the moment, but someday, perhaps.
Crashlands will ship with a campaign created by Butterscotch, but you and collaborators can build and share your own campaigns through the web-based editor as well. This sounds like a super-cool and absurdly ambitious feature, but it could prove to be a really cool feature being added to this ambitious open-world survival game.
