Did iOS 8.3 fix a lot of games that were previously broken? That may have been the case, as an intrepid reader let us know that Helsing’s Fire ($0.99), the puzzler from Lucas Pope, who went on to create the hit indie game Papers, Please ($4.99), is working now on iOS 8.3. This isn’t after the promised update, but, no, it just works now. I haven’t played the game in years, but on my iPhone 6 Plus, it works totally fine. Not that we wouldn’t love to see a modernizing update for the game, but hey, at least it works now.
It seems like something with iOS 8.3 in particular may have fixed things. Sonic 4 Episode 2 started working again recently, though the game is currently delisted. We’re not totally sure what changed, but based on some quick tests, our operating hypothesis is this: if a change in iOS 7 broke the game, it should work now. If a change in iOS 8 broke the game, it probably won’t. Geometry Wars: Touch doesn’t work in iOS 8, but after playing it on an iOS 6 device, you’re not missing too much that you can’t get with the new Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions ($9.99).
If any developers out there know what might have changed to fix apps, please let us know in the comments or email us! And for our readers and anyone lamenting their old games: it’s worth checking your old broken apps to see what works now. If you find some cool ones that now run on iOS 8.3 that didn’t before, post in the comments below and let us know!
