When 2K teased the gaming world last week with a website called AdventFuture.org, many reddit sleuths quickly uncovered clues that the tease was about a new XCOM ($4.99) game, and, as always, reddit was right. XCOM 2, a full sequel to the award-winning game, is coming this November, apparently only for PCs. While 2K seem to be firm on the game’s exclusivity, I can’t say that I’ve never heard such promises before only to see them quietly retracted as companies search for more players (cash).
XCOM 2 is making what I think is an ingenious change that will make the game feel distinct from its predecessor; the Earth is now ruled by Aliens, and the player’s team is part of a weak guerrilla force that has gone underground in an attempt to fight and overthrow the technologically-superior enemy. As you can see from the image below and from the reveal trailer, gone are your super-soldiers with their mech-suits and futuristic sniper weapons. Instead, what you have now are shotguns and a machete. Since you are now much weaker technologically than your enemies, you’ll have to rely more on stealth tactics and struggle to make the best of limited resources.
The game’s levels will be procedurally-generated this time around, which will help alleviate the first XCOM‘s monotony engendered by seeing the same levels over and over again. Finally, there’ll be increased soldier customization, which says a lot considering that one of XCOM‘s strongest features was its soldier customization system. We’ll be getting more info soon, along with gameplay videos, and I’m looking forward to the day I write the story about how XCOM2 is coming to iOS.
