‘Threes’ Creator Asher Vollmer’s New Game ‘Royals’ Available Now on PC

Those of you looking to play the next game from Threes ($5.99) creator Asher Vollmer finally have your chance, though not on mobile. While his game Close Castles is on hold (and not necessarily planned as a mobile game), you can play Royals right now. This is a smaller game currently on Windows and Mac, where you play as a peasant, trying to make your way in a 1-bit world, and eventually become a royal. Much like Drake, you’ll have to start from the bottom, though. But over time, you and your whole team can get to the top. But death will eventually come for you. Literally, you can die of old age.

Royals

Now, Royals isn’t currently on mobile (though if you have a Windows tablet, it technically is, I suppose!), but it’s not impossible that it would come to iOS. I played an early version of the game at GDC, hooked up to an MFi controller. And I asked Asher Vollmer and he said he’s “undecided" about a mobile version, so it’s not impossible. Still, this game absolutely enthralled me when I was at GDC, and I’m looking forward to sitting down and playing some more of this.

Looks cool enough. I've always enjoyed light bikes, but never found a quality experience.

BeamWars for the old Mac OS is still the best, IMO. Hard Lines is a vague approximation on iOS.

Just had a look at the video on TA for Hard Lines - it looks fun, but, isn't available from the UK AppStore. Why was I born English, not American?

I'm really starting to detest these twitch games that depend on fast reactions and nothing else. This is technically a nice looking game but that's where it ends. There's no imagination. No attempt at introducing gameplay and reward elements.

One crash and the game ends. There is never any reward, never any relief from that one breakneck speed. No incentive to continue.

The best light bike game I've found on the AppStore so far is LightBike 2. It's a game I keep going back to even though it's been around for quite a while.

I'm getting agitated just watching the video. I guess it's not for me lol. The original light cycle game had you beating opponents. This game is just go fast, crash, reset. Go fast, crash, reset. It's just trial and error. Nothing else?
