Dinofarm Games’ Auro: A Monster-Bumping Adventure ($1.99) was a game which our Shaun Musgrave gave a five-star review, and is one that has actually become one of my go-to games when I’m just looking to play something quickly, but that doesn’t mean there’s not room for improvement. Five stars out of five isn’t equivalent to “perfect" by any stretch of the imagination. For example, Auro launched with a tutorial that takes place over 31 missions designed to explain every single nuance of the game. It was kind of comical, and even I skipped most of them once I felt I had a handle on the mechanics. Thankfully, Keith Burgun of Dinofarm Games thinks that was a bit excessive too, and is changing that in update 1.29, coming soon – and it’s bringing a whole host of changes to the game.
The tutorials have been cut down to 20, but also, the last 10 have been hidden until rank 4 is reached in Play Mode, so you don’t have to feel like you have to complete all the tutorial missions to play the game.
There are a number of big changes that the patch notes go over, and even a podcast that goes into further details. Tired of update descriptions that just say “Bug fixes and performance enhancements," or Ubisoft’s oddly-phrased “Our team is working permanently to improve your experience" text? Here, you can get almost too much information. The big one is that now you start off with all 4 spells that you’re going to have, instead of getting 2 and earning more over time. The combo meter now goes 1,3,4,5 instead of 1,2,3,4 – and the game gets a lot harder around level 4, so you need to score a lot and quickly.
It’ll be interesting to see how all these changes affect the game. If you have the Android version, 1.29 is available now, and the iOS version will be available once Apple approves it, hopefully by the end of the week.
