Like most Americans, my guilty pleasures include watching a silly amount of incredibly stupid reality TV. My most recent obsession following powering through the entirety of season six of Sister Wives on Hulu is National Geographic’s Doomsday Preppers which either just hit Netflix streaming, or the powers that be just decided to make it appear in my recommended feed.
The premise of the show essentially amounts to each episode focuses on a different person or family who is totally obsessed with prepping. What’s prepping? It’s the (potentially American-centric?) phenomenon of being absolutely certain the end of the world is nearly upon us, and while different preppers might believe that different circumstances will bring about the fall of civilization, they all share one thing in common: Knowing that life as we know it is on the brink. This leads to these people hoarding survival gear, food, fuel, and similar supplies along with potentially taking various (sometimes extreme) defensive measures to protect said hoard- All to guarantee their survival in whatever specific post-apocalyptic world they think tomorrow holds.
There’s also a mobile game, because of course there is. Doomsday Preppers (Free) apes the Tiny Tower (Free) formula and has you building your multi-level survival bunker and stocking it with supplies to ride out the end of the world. The tone of the game is hilarious too, given how totally serious the people in the Doomsday Preppers TV show are about their survival. Compare the above trailer for the TV show with this one for the game:
Do you need to download the Doomsday Preppers game? It came out in 2012 during the height of the Tiny Tower cloning bonanza, so unless you really are looking for another Tiny Tower to play, probably not… Buuuut, it is pretty crazy that said game even exists. I guess when you’ve got a market of over two billion apps now, nothing should surprise me anymore.
Now, back to packing my bug out bag.
