We’ve all been waiting for this one, perhaps a bit too anxiously at times. As we all know, whenever new iOS updates come, a lot of Square Enix’s games tend to stop working or break in strange ways. Some big titles were affected this time around, and Square has slowly been making their way around, updating them one by one. I’m going to level with you all, I had my doubts this update was ever happening, even though the game was still available in the App Store with a notice about Square Enix investigating an update. I mean, I had no reason to disbelieve, but it was just such a long time coming, it was hard not to get worried. It was especially sad in this case because the game in question isn’t easily available in English anywhere else, with the exception being a somewhat rare release on last-generation Nintendo hardware.
Well, we can all breathe a sigh of relief, because Fortune Street Smart (Free) has finally been updated to work with the latest version of iOS and newer iOS devices. Sadly, that comes at a heavy cost, as iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3rd Generation devices are no longer supported, but I think it’s something we’re all willing to bear just to have this game properly playable once again. With all the Dragon Quest love Square Enix has been showing mobile gamers recently, it’s nice to see Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii’s other popular series hasn’t been forgotten. I wish they’d bring some of the Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy guest characters to the mobile version, but even without them, the game itself is still the same fun as always.
I’m sorry I teased you there, but I think the fact that Square Enix is updating a game this old and somewhat low-profile outside of Japan shows that you should never fully give up hope on them updating their various iOS games, poor old Bloodmasque excepted. They just tend to take their time on these things. Let’s hope the next Square Enix update post I write is for the game you all wanted this one to be about, but in the meantime, let’s enjoy some Fortune Street!
