Team17’s ‘Flockers’, a Sheepy Take on ‘Lemmings’, Briefly Available on iOS

flockersiconDeveloper Team17 has released fifty billion Worms games over the years. Just trust me that that number is totally accurate, and don’t go fact-checking or anything, OK?. Anyway, you’d think that as much as they must love their Worms they have probably been dying to make something at least slightly different. That’s the feeling I get about their latest game Flockers, which launched on consoles and PC last September and today briefly found its way to iOS. The game has been taken down as of this writing, and no word on if it was an accidental launch or if there was some other major problem. But, we can at least say that sometime soon we’ll have a version of Flockers on iOS.

Flockers is unashamedly inspired by Lemmings, which can either be good or bad depending on how you feel about the classic puzzler. Amusingly, while Flockers isn’t another Worms game, it does take place in the Worms universe. Remember all those sheep you’ve used as weapons in Worms games for the past two decades? Yeah, well those sheep aren’t exactly stoked about all that. In Flockers the sheep have banded together to escape the Worms weapon factory. The only problem is they’re as dumb as… well, they’re as dumb as sheep, and they’ll need your help to accomplish their goal. You know the drill here: bestow special abilities upon certain sheep in order to progress through a level, and much like Lemmings, that often requires making some gory sheep sacrifices. Check out the launch trailer for the console and PC version.

I hadn’t played Flockers on previous platforms, and I’ve only just spent a short time fiddling around with the iOS version which I was able to nab while it was available, but so far I’m liking it. The game received middling reviews upon its initial release, mostly due to not progressing the Lemmings formula in any meaningful way, but there’s a startling lack of Lemmings-like games on iOS so I’m always down for a new take on the genre. There are some more impressions in our forums from players who were able to grab the game, and once we get official word on what the deal is with Flockers on iOS and when it will return we’ll let you know.
