Gameloft’s ‘Dungeon Hunter 4’ Coming This Month – A Storyline Returns, But Still Freemium

We already knew that Iron Man 3 is on the horizon later this month, but there’s some additional Gameloft news that’ll likely get fans of the Dungeon Hunter series super stoked: Dungeon Hunter 4 is due out this month.

What we’ve heard so far is that the series is taking a significant departure from Dungeon Hunter 3 (Free) with a focus far more on the single player aspect of the game. The game, however, remains a freemium title. TUAW describes that aspect of the game:

Unfortunately, despite abandoning the “arena" ideas that caused so many problems with the third game in the series, the freemium elements are still there in force. You will probably enjoy this one — if you can avoid and ignore the bright in-app purchase buttons and currency markers that seem to litter the screen.

iMore has hands on video:

There’s some action brewing in our forums over the game, but if you want to be alerted when Dungeon Hunter 4 is released or when we get more details on it, be sure to add it to your watch list in the TouchArcade App (Free).

    1. I wish they would just so a monthly fee of like 2.99 or something an make the game fair and balanced across the board.

Then again that would turn away a lot of people and would ultimately be less in their pockets from the loss of nickel and diming.

  1. I really really enjoyed the first two of these. The third one F’d up the series for me. I hope they get it right this time by going back to basics.

It’s almost like they followed Blizz’s path. Release D1: Success
    Release D2: Great Success!
Release D3: Money grabbing RMAH Game…
    D4???

  2. I like how my RSS reader truncated the headline:

“Gameloft’s ‘Dungeon Hunter 4’ Coming This Month – A Storyline Returns, But Still”

  3. DH2 is still one if my favorite ios games but DH3 ruined the franchise for me.

DH4 may be back to having a singleplayer story but because of the freemium aspect, ill be avoiding this just like i did with DH3,

  4. The freemium on dh3 wasn’t that intrusive, and the fact that the storyline is back rather than that retarded wave gameplay has me rather excited.

  5. I hope the grahics are better then dh3 and gameloft take advantage of the retina display

  6. When he was talking about the gems he quickly slipped in “if you want to speed up upgrades”. So likely it will have the same timer based upgrade mechanics as the last one. In fact it seems like the whole freemium structure is the same, you’re just being fleeced in dungeons instead of arenas.

  7. Gameloft titles have been increasingly disappointing over time for me. Even the older “1 price for whole game” titles from before are lackluster with boring stories and environments and laughable character animations now when I venture to replay them.

I liked the first two Dungeon Hunter games, but as many have said, the arena model and move to Freemium have taken the fun out of this Franchise almost entirely. Thankfully actually, considering the wealth of actual fully fleshed out adventure and actions games now available on the store I have a hard time imagining myself even wanting to play their games, let alone actually pay them anything…

Even their flagship Asphalt series is failing to the competition… It’s a pretty sad day to be Gameloft. I hope they make a move to reinvent themselves as interesting sometime soon, because baring that, I will probably never be playing a Gameloft title again. Just not worth the time it burns :-

  8. I hope the graphics are better then DH3, hope gameloft takes advantage of the retina display, which they havnt been doing lately, kinda werid because their one of the “biggest” developers out for mobil/ios…

  9. I no longer bother even downloading anything from Gameloft if it’s freemium, as I have never played one single freemium title from Gameloft that I like. While there are some companies out there that can make a enjoyable freemium game, Gameloft is not one of them.

  10. What a load of shat. Still waiting for news on Infinity Blade: Dungeons. Wish they’d just tell us that it’s cancelled already. But anyway, just cause a game looks good doesn’t make it very original, doesn’t help if it’s freemium to “Game”loft.

  11. Controller support plz! Also, I don’t mind freemium games, as long as the game doesn’t suffer because of it. I hope they don’t make skills/loot SO difficult to obtain as a means of pushing people to spend $$. Not all of us are rich GL 🙂

  12. The game looks very good:)
Wish the make itt like champions of norath.. That was a really good game!!
Orc is still on the app store the best in this genre!!

  13. Wow, talk about destroying a great game. Most people would pay 5-10 dollars but freemium games are horrible. As they should of learned with DH3 nobody will buy into this… At least I hope not, gameloft needs to learn a lesson here…
