I just heard on a few websites that this morning (December 31, 2008) every 30 GB Zune was rendered completely useless. I also heard that the only way to fix the problem involved taking off the back. Microsoft hasn't released any info on how to fix the problem. I don't have a Zune, but I feel sorry for all those people with wasted money.:(

Yeah, why would you buy a Zune? I kid, I kid. But yeah, this does suck. Sounds like the year 2000 thing. Wonder why this happened though?

Could be something to do with the "leap second"

I think it has everything to do with Microsoft planning to take over the world.

I imagine it will be like the Transformers movie, and tomorrow they will sprout arms and legs and shoot little bullets.

But really, what a strange problem. It's not like 2009 is a weird number or anything (like Y2K). I kind of look forward to seeing what the problem turns out to be.

And i'm glad my iPod didn't do it.

EDIT: And I just read on some other forum that it might be an issue of, surprise surprise, the clock. Seems as though some people resetting the time to January 1st fixed the issue. Presumably.

MS planted a kill switch. They want you to go buy new Zunes. They just hit it, and closed support for the day.

Thats my theory. Apple just doesn't give updates. MS gives updates with "easter eggs" that make the device useless.

    Wow, that's really weird.

I wonder what MicroSoft is planning on doing, lol... I'm glad I never even considered buying a Zune. iPods for life ;)

People are saying it has something to do with today being the 366th day of the year. Leap year: who saw it coming?

The other theory I like is the one that says Steve jobs did it -- with his mind.
