Bastion and Bard's tale. They're not krpg's. they are "action/RPGs". The best 2 on the AppStore in my opinion. The original (paid) Zenonia games, specifically the first one, Heroes in time, Cimson Heart and master of dungeon+ are my favourite krpg's and lack some of the more obtrusive IAP mechanics. Those would be my recommendations for other games in this genre to try.
Bastion !!!!!!! I've just downloaded it when it was last week for one buck but didn't play it yet as I'm in with my new Iphone 5 playing quietly on Infinite Blade 1 as I couldn't do it with my old 3GS ! Thanks a lot for your advice, I will take a look on Bard's tale !
The BEST krpg on the appstore is definitely Crimson Heart. There's no comparison to anything out there. It has more features, better control, better graphics, and BETTER control. I said that again because it's one of the only krpgs that don't have the 4 direction movement that gets so annoying. That game is worth the money.
Well, I played for a couple of hours, and I have some thoughts and a couple tips. 1.) The always-online DRM. Yes, it can be bad for those with crappy and/or no Internet connection. For those with a decent connection, I did not see a noticeable decrease in playability, but anecdotal evidence is anecdotal evidence and should be doubted until proven. In any case, the game loses one star due to implementing this DRM method. 2.) The IAP balance. These kinds of games need to be approached in a certain way in order to never hit the pay wall; deviate from a pattern that works, and it could cost you in the long run. Here is where I suggest my gameplay tips (if you already know these, you can skip them): A.) Complete every side quest almost as soon as they become available, and finish them before moving on to the main quest, if possible. I have run into parts where I would get a side quest for an area not yet unlocked in the main story because side quest availability is based on character level, not story progress. A little weird, but shouldn't be much of a problem. The reason this is important is because doing side quests is the bona-fide fastest way to gain XP without reaching for the wallet. Thus, they all should be completed. Unequivocally, without question, ASAP if possible. B.) When choosing skills, try to stick to this ratio: one active to two passive. This is because active skill damage/healing/whathaveyou amounts are a percentage of one, maybe two of your stats, like attack/defense/yougetthepoint, whereas passives increase the quantities that actives take a percentage of. Thus, there is obvious skill synergy between character stats boosted by passive skills and active skills that use those character stats for their power. Thus, one active skill to two passive skills when possible. If a key passive skill is not leveled up, then make that passive a priority for your leveling. C.) Take it easy. This game is a massive grind. Not only that, certain systems like the upgrade systems function like newb traps to waste gold and encourage IAP. Thus, to make sure that you understand what a particular function does (item upgrades vs. refining equipment) and whether or not the function is necessary for gameplay (no and no). You must take the combat progression from the beginning weak enemies to the stronger enemies in much the same fashion. If you find your health deopping by half every monster fight in a particular map and you're burning through potions, either grind that map for a while, or retreat to an earlier map with slightly weaker, more manageable enemies and grind those for a bit. Items will drop; learn to ignore/destroy non-magical items when bag space is needed, and to leave behind equipment that isn't for your class. When it comes to materials, I find it helpful to phase out the materials from the previous areas by destroying them/using them via crafting to make room for materials from the current area, unless you want to keep old materials for a particular recipe you have, in which case I'd say to finish with the recipe and move on. Speaking of recipes, the potion combine recipes are a godsend. Use those to cut down on your potion bills. (tips are finished, thoughts continued) I give the gameplay half a star for being solid for standard KRPG gameplay, but with very game-breaking IAPs that, if not indulged in, create a looming pay wall that a skilled player must be holy terrified of to not hit. 3.) The story is too early for me to tell, but I am glad that we are no longer playing as FREAKING REGRET RRRGGGHHH, not because I disliked the character, but because I wanted to move on from his bloody story. WE GET IT. REGRET WAS AWESOME. CAN WE PLEASE JUST MOVE ON AND TELL NEW STORIES IN THIS UNIVERSE?! It's too early for me to say, but I THINK that is the case with this game, although if Regret shows up as a playable character ONCE AGAIN, My GAWD there will be Heck to pay >_< I did notice some bits of the dialogue that hinted at the old humor from the first game. I wonder if the same guy who wrote the English dialogue for the first game is in on this one? I can honestly say that I could tell that the dialogue belongs to the Zenonia series.... Hmmmmm..... At the very least, I give the story (as of this moment in my play through) one tentative half star; at least it FEELS like Zenonia. That half-star will disappear if Regret shows up as some sort of crazy Deus Ex Machina solution that makes everything better .... But if he DOESN'T show up, then the half-star stays. 4.) The graphics I like the clean style to the artwork. There is no noticeable pixelation on the 4S, which is rare for a KRPG. I also like the animations of the people and enemies. You can tell that the art budget went into making the people of the Zenonia world look lifelike in a surprisingly engaging way. Full immersion is curtailed, however, once you notice how static the environments are. Nothing that is non-interactive moves; it gives the impression that the world is just some sort of artificial construct that these characters are trapped in... which COULD be seen as true if you get metaphysical about the art of the videogame, but that could hurt even MY brain after a while. It does break the quality the detailed animations and clean art style gives, but then again it DOES cause those same animations to stand out and be noticeable. Thus, I give this game a full star for graphics if you don't mind the static backgrounds, and a half-star if the static environments weird you out. I have no idea about the audio; never played without my device being muted. Others will have to give more in-depth analyses of the audio. I do give this game a full star for effort; the game is very functional with no noticeable bugs, it can be fun to play if you approach it right, and the graphical upgrade is appreciated. Also, the game, at the very least, echoes the style of the original, which was nice for me to experience. That gives a total of *breaks out the Reviewing Calculator* 3/5 to 2.5/5; average, maybe slightly above average depending on your preference as to the graphics. Sincerely, Mr. Album
