Okay, so, the complicated history of Ys, as abridged as I can manage (so brew some coffee): Overview: There are eight "stories" in Ys proper. There are, of course, many spin-offs, but few of them have released in English, and pretty much none of them are any good. What makes Ys a bit different from other RPG series is that Falcom was pretty free about outsourcing console ports, and didn't necessarily care if they were accurate in terms of gameplay. Falcom is a rare bird in the Japanese development scene - they started on PCs and more or less stayed there until the PSP generation. Their games are usually the sole bright spot in Japanese PC game sections, which are otherwise filled with adult/porn games. Anyway, Ys by Ys: Ys 1: Originally launched on PC-88, available in English on SEGA Master System, TG-16, Nintendo DS, PSP, PC, Mobile. Available in Japanese on pretty much everything. Falcom originally only did the PC-88/98 versions. Master System version was done by SEGA, TG-16 by Alfa System for Hudson. Falcom returned to this one with Ys Eternal for Windows 98, a remake that served as the basis for all versions after. Falcom themselves did the port to PSP (Ys Chronicle), which they then backported to PC for Steam. This is the version that DotEmu's is based on, I'm quite sure. Ys 2: Originally launched on PC-88, available in English on TG-16, Nintendo DS, PSP, PC. Available in Japanese on almost everything else. Usually packaged with Ys 1, this game directly continues from Ys 1 and uses similar gameplay. Falcom's history with it is similar as well. I assume we'll be seeing at least this from DotEmu, if nothing else. Fun fact: English releases of the PlayStation 2 ports of Ys 1&2 Eternal were planned, but rejected by Sony of America due to some of their old silly policies. Ys 3: Originally launched on PC-88, available in English on Genesis, SNES, TG-16. Okay, this is where things get complicated. Ys 3 is a side-scrolling action game because Falcom gives no flocks and things like that happened back then. Riot did the Genesis port for Telenet, Tonkin House/Advance Communication did the SNES port for Sammy, and Alfa System did the TG-16 version. All were decent ports, in my opinion, but the game itself is not so hot. The TG-16 version is probably the definitive one, though. BUT Years later, Falcom looked at Ys 3 and how it was kind of the oddball of the series. They decided to give it a remake using the Ys 6 engine, with the final product known as Ys: Oath In Felghana. *That* game is available in English on PSP and PC, and it is the cattest of all cat's pajamas. If you don't like Felghana, we are not friends, ever. Ys 4: Originally launched on ... oh boy. Okay, did I say Ys 3 was complicated? Anyway, available in English on Vita ONLY as Ys: Memories of Celceta. Hudson wanted a new Ys as the first three had done very well on TG-16. They asked Falcom, but Falcom was having some trouble at the moment and couldn't develop their own version. They created an incredibly loose scenario and handed it off to Hudson and Alfa System to develop on their own. This version was known as Dawn of Ys. Falcom then pitched the scenario to devs for the other consoles, with Tonkin House returning for the SFC version (Mask Of The Sun) and SEGA assisting for the never-released Genesis version (also called Mask of the Sun). Years later, Falcom finally made their own version of the game on Vita with the Ys 7 engine, called Ys: Memories of Celceta. Ys 4 in all forms was much closer to the first two games than 3 had been. Ys 5: Originally launched on Super Famicom, not officially available in English. Adol gets a sword button! Falcom actually developed this one themselves, but it's a very weird game in the line-up and I'll be happy when it's obliterated from the canon by an inevitable sequel. It just doesn't feel like Ys at all. Even more so than Ys 3 didn't. There is a fan translation around on the Internet store if you like. This game had an outsourced PS2 version, as they all did, but it never saw English release. Ys 6: Originally launched on Windows PC, available in English on Steam (just released, go get it!), PlayStation 2, PSP. So, Falcom did the original Windows PC version and the recent Steam release. The console ports were done by Konami. The PS2 version is alright, but the loading times on the PSP version are pretty bad, so play at your own risk there. Ys 6's engine represented something of a revival for the series, used to remake Ys 3 and to create the next game on our list. Ys Origin: Originally launched on Windows PC, available in English on Steam. So far this is the only Ys that's PC-only (well, okay, there's a Japan-only feature phone version, but yeah...). It's a prequel that takes place in the same vicinity as Ys 1/2, with characters other than Adol playable for the first time in the series. It's really good, though I still prefer Felghana. Ys 7: Originally launched on PSP, available in English on PSP. Falcom-developed, multiple party members, playable Dogi. The engine was used to make Memories in Celceta. An eighth game is on the way, but I'm not sure if it's using a new engine or a heavily modified version of 7's. Anyway, that's Ys. It's awesome. Good luck with the bats.
I'm generally a sucker for punishment, playing this on hard first run through but this one boss...I can barely scratch him. How the fudge do I beat the damn 'homing bat boss', I can hit him if I time it right but never enough to kill him without firing first. In fact the other bosses didn't even take a 2nd look at how easy they were. I'm maxed levelled, have all the silver gear as well.
Welcome to the Gatekeeper of Ys, so to speak. There are people that never get any further than you are now. I'd love to give you a magic trick to do it, but it's not that easy. Here's some advice: Spoiler First of all, good on you for being max level/full silver gear. Unfortunately, that means the rest is down to your skill. When you open the chest and he appears, immediately head up, then try to juke around the cluster without taking too many hits. Herd the group around using a sort-of figure-8 pattern, but always keep them just behind you so that you can run in for a hit when he forms. After he takes a hit, run vertically as far as you can get from him, without moving too much horizontally. Before the first bat touches you, run horizontally to a corner on the other side of the room, keeping the herd just behind you so you don't miss a chance to hit him. Keep at it, avoid mistakes, and he'll go down sooner or later. Good luck! He's not even the hardest boss, so think of it as practice, haha.
What are the 5 RPGs? I searched through the first 4-5 pages of this forum and didn't find any other popular RPGs other than Ys.
Just bought this for the 3rd time. I will try make some time to play through this. I own many Ys games but never played them. If they all come to iOS that would make me very happy. As iPad is my main gaming platform now days.
Im pretty sure on that post he meant Ys, Trulon, Warrior Heart, Microgue and Destiny Emerald, but a few more popped up actually. Soul Unleashed, Marvel Future Fight (worldwide launch) and DeckDeDungeon. Im not familiar with Enchanted Cave 2, but it looks like an RPG too.
Wow... Cant believe im going to say this as it has been a while since i did... I AM STUCK. After defeating the bat dude im not sure how to proceed. Spoiler the hint says to talk to feenah and jevah in zeptik which i did, but there were no changes to the conversation. Im thinking maybe i should take an item to either of them? Im not sure if i should be looking for the statues needed for the room behind the bat dude's location in the mines. Funny how im feeling nostalgic being stuck. I love playing classic titles.
I got stuck here yesterday too, and I've played this game several times. Spoiler Try talking to them both, then leaving town and coming back and doing it again? Or try having Jevah read all three Ys books to you? The hint is referring to talking to them together in Jevah's house; if Feena is still outside, you can't progress the plot. Hope that works for you, it did for me.
Finished the game up this morning on my Air 2. Took me 8 tries to finish off the final boss... which, in spite of the jittery control stick, is about normal for me vs. that boss. I've played everything that's made it over here in the series, and the final bosses of 1 and 2 are the only enemies in the series that I can't reliably defeat. (So, as much as I love Ys Time Attack - I placed in the Konami contest when Ys VI came out on PS2 here - it's really frustrating to play time attack in this one when I only have about a 1/6 - 1/8 chance of actually winning against the last boss.) Don't think I'll be going after all the achievements in this one. I'm glad it came to iOS, but if I'm going to replay this version, I'll go back to PC where I have better control.
Im crashing a lot in the Devil's Corridor, after i went out the room with "that guy" (to avoid spoilers ). I'll try again later after a hard boot.
Ouch. Seems fatal. Everytime i try to get out of the room the game crashes back to springboard. Anyone finished this yet?
Yep, I finished the whole game. I had three crashes during the 20 or so attempts it took me to clear the last fight, but no problems with the Devil's Corridor at all. Weird.
I had no crashes through the game (iPad Air 2, 8.3). Granted, I already knew what to do in Devil's Corridor and broke the pipe before ever entering.
Yeah i was about to leave the room to get back to the pipe but couldnt leave the room without crashing. I've got a savefile a few floors before that so i'll try again later.
Thank you 4 all! Hi everyone, The Dotemu team and I really wanted to thank you about your messages. We develop those games to bring our gaming legacy to everyone, and we're very happy to see so much people sharing that state of mind. We saw that some of you encounter some problems to finish the game. We are actually working hard to collect any bug issues from players and be sure we will do our best to update the game very soon. To finish, we also take notes about technic points you talked about, and will try to make the best for you Thank you again, and feel free to contact us for any question or feedback! Maxime from DotEmu
^To follow up on the crashing issue, i reloaded a file just before i got to that floor and broke the pipe first before going in, and there were no crashes.
In addition to that Devil's Corridor crash, the game also has a tendency to crash during the last boss fight. When the fireballs strike the platform and do their "thing", the game will sometimes kick you out to the home screen.
