Localization is such an important part of games that diversity of the people here in the forum might help. We could help each other with translattion, or simply check if translation company has done things right. And even learn abit about each other's market. I'll start. Mother tongue 1. Mandarin Chinese Almost there 1. Cantonese Chinese 2. Bahasa Residiing now 1. Beijing Cheers!
Although I dont think its really that usefull I live in sweden and thus speak swedish =p I dont really think its necessary to localize games in sweden since people are generally atleast decent in english But i can atleast throw it out there if anyone needs it =) Location Sweden Speaks Swedish, english
Yea, that's the question I wanted to ask. I lived in Sweden and Norway and know that people here speaks good English. My friends say don't bother translating. My question is, would Swedes appreciate using an app if it's in Swedish, or rather it's like "Even though there's a Swedish version, but I still want to use the English one."
I worked in European language localistion for a few years or localization for the yanks I found that some people really hated being forced to play the game in their own language but more really appreciated the translation. Those against wanted the game to be in it's original language because very few translated games maintain the humour or atmosphere after the internationalisation process...unless someone like Blizzard handles it. Scandinavian people, Germans and eastern Europeans tend to have excellent English. Although the French, Spanish and Italians can be a little more opposed to learning the global language...and why should they?? They live in awesome countries that have everything anyone can ever need! Not that the other countries are less awesome it just that their peoples might be a little more flexible.. Anyway I think most iPhone games can function without translation as long as you have a solid interactive (very visual) tutorial. If you are going down the translation route it's best to make the language ol school selectable on launch and don't auto load your game in a translated language based on iDevice language settings.
