I bought this after reading the hype about it. Was a mistake, after playing it for 30-40 mins and trying to like it, I do not. It's times like this I wish the App Store had a refund button like android does. I'm not knocking the game or saying it's bad, just saying it's not for me.
Game design meltdown Serious design mistakes were made in this sequel. Most serious are the matching tiles. The distinct pink backpacks have been replaced by indistinct crates that blend into the background, and the brain and brawn tiles are nearly identical. It throws a wrench into the whole flow of the gameplay. Also slowing the flow is how items appear in the playfield now. I see what the designer was going for, as it creates a tradeoff between having items or having an easier time matching, and it's probably considered a benefit that eyes and fingers don't need to travel to the item section to activate items. But it also adds to the tile confusion, adds more confusion as items now move around the screen and need to be located before they can be activated, and I think it's a flat-out mistake to interfere with the core gameplay mechanic with use items like this. Finally, we have obstacles that need to be cleared with unpredictable matches. I'm talking crates and traps. In 10000000, you were either facing a monster or a lock. This information was easy to quickly absorb from the top display, so you could get right down to business matching attacks or keys, with perhaps a little strategy on how many keys to match or which attack to use. Now we have traps and crates, where the player can't intuitively know which tile they need to match to defeat. They need to look carefully at a tiny icon to get that information. I can't really think of anything this game does that 10000000 doesn't do better. Everything that has been added only serves to subtract from the experience. I give the game 3 stars. -1 for the actual design flaws, and another -1 for the disappointment of taking 10000000 and simply making it worse.
Not really, just a case of the core gameplay becoming very stale. Right now I have no idea if there's anything that I'm looking forward to from the progression in the game. It would just be new locations, news mob sprites and some new rooms on the ship. Almost all of that is either cosmetic or just very small incremental damage/shield/hp etc upgrades. Just not very appealing. 10000000 was great because a refreshing spin on the formula, unfortunately YMBAB brings almost nothing new to the table.
My exact feelings. I dont like the sliding match mechanic at all and it just became too hard and I lost interest. Great game for fans of the style tho.
I found the upgrades helpful, but I see what you're saying. I may have to buy 10000000 to compare, though.
Still lovin' it. It's more of the same, but MORE of the same. Crate color took some getting used to, and final punctuation disappearing all the time is odd, but fun and well-done. Can see why it might not be for everyone, but it gets my vote. That said, dear god, how do I get 90 gold in a run, raaaaagh.
For those interested, I just finished my review. Hope you find it informative! http://www.appunwrapper.com/2015/06/04/you-must-build-a-boat-review/
nice review between that and the people disappointed after buying it, and mostly because of the sliding mechanic i dislike, i will hold off for now.
The first game didn't have Game Center achievements until an update a couple years after release, was really hoping this new one would have them too, but it doesn't have any GC at all Any chance of GC being added via update for this one?
Do items found in chests have any function other than to sell (once that becomes available)? I don't see any way to equip/use them.
I got a "secret" monster. But again, without having control over that stuff, I'm not sure how one would find other secret monsters. Or why one is secret and others are not. Edit: I just checked and it said "Secret Collect" while I was looking through my Library. So....maybe not a secret monster, just discovered something. I dunno.
TA was so right about this game! When you start, you just cant stop playing it! Long time ago since I played a single mobile game for 1.5 hours straight!
I obtained one by using a fish while fighting the gelatinous cube ("Geltower"), and another from checking my library when I had a large number of entries ("Catapult").
