After mocking up both firing mechanisms the mortar method with a rear mounted gun adds more variety. I will get the animations in and post a new video.
Yeah. I knocked up both ways of firing and the mortar worked much better. Some new scenery has been added too. What foreground scenery themes would you guys like to see as you progress? Here is a video of it in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUGUoKo3naM&fmt=18
Although this idea isn't realistic, I think you should add a jumping feature to the game's controls. It could allow a more platform experience to be implemented.
I like the one on the right of the duck, and the rear mounted morter of the enemy. The advantage of the rear mounted morter is you have the ability to dodge it, or perhaps hit the morter - with a straight shot, you either get hit, or if you can blow up enemies shots - you would be doing nothing other than trying to do that. Definitely morter. Is duck going to have some guided missles? Or an area bomb?
I think there should be an "easy" mode (less UFOs, only straight firing wheel things) and a "hard" mode (as many, if not more, UFOs as seen in the gameplay video, straight and mortar style wheels) and the "duck" you use coincides with the mode your in (first, easy, second, hard)
pluto6 : I am planning on an upgrade system with some new weapon types. Bluellama: I'm going to have "levels" that start off easier and have different movement types, speeds and fire speeds and frequency and different enemies or have the level mechanism played out through a timed survival mode where it gets harder as you go along. I didn't get too much done yesterday after that video... Well I made the frame rate dips go away so it's more constantly 60 fps now but you wont see that in the videos. I'm working on a new enemy today... Should have a video online later today.
Here's the video of the new enemy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BReqVa58DB8&fmt=18 It's a boss type character. He's not finished yet though. I have an animation where he blinks and attacks and he'll be invulnerable. Then he opens his eyes and you can shoot him then. The sound effect is only temporary.
At first I wanted the top turret, but now looking at the video, your right, the back turret works a lot better. And for the new video, the enemy is going by really good.
It looks like the accelerometer control is only in 1 plane - does this mean that you will be able to play this lying down for instance? Most of the accelerometer based games require you to be sitting up, and the iDevice generally not at more than 45 degrees... Not a huge deal, but I enjoy playing games before going to bed.. and you need to have the iDevice more in the vertical than horizontal. I obviously don't know what sort of programming nightmare that is or not... Boss in the video looks cool. Sound effect would be OK as an introduction -but would get pretty annoying - it is pretty piercing - if you had a several minute battle.
Thanks for that Game Reaper. Whenever I try to embed the videos it doesn't work. Pluto, yes, you can play laying down. I haven't been working on the game this weekend as I went and got a cat but next week I'm going to to get the UI in to the game (score and lives) and tie the level and boss together so you can play through a "level" and see how it plays out and what needs adjusting.
