This update included a HUD (stuff the casual gamer will never understand), some some more details on the mini-map on the settings screen.

Not that big of an update, but at least it is one. I hope soon Austin will finally add some more planes and actual buildings for the airports.

I agree, airports would be a pretty cool addition.

    hihihi

yes, more planes and airports or a slight price drop would convince me to buy this...i'm just afraid that as soon as i do buy it, the price will drop, or x-plane [different landscape] will be developed and sold

i dunno...I should just break down and buy it, i do want it...but have been burned so many times...maybe one more week...i'll play topple and jelly car to bide my time

    I should have waited...

I think i should have waited, it is awesome for a flight sim, but I think it could be just a hair more polished in terms of some small buildings or something...

    something like a ground shadow...

I am hoping that now that they have the interest and captivation of their newest group of buyers - the real pilots, that now they will add the following to this wonderful flight sim:
    -MORE PLANES!!!
-more places to fly (more than just Insbruck, Austria)
-groundshadows! I, like others of you can't get a good landing to save my life!
-also airports would be incredibly gladly welcome along with more improvement of the terrain/scenery (such as buildings and the like, to make it similar to the desktop PC/Mac version.)

I only have the demo of the desktop version, but it IS quite a bit more detailed and there still several things to be added to make it equal to the desktop version, but the iPhone is getting closer and closer with every update they release.

That's Austin's comment to the update process. He said that about a week ago.

I wonder if the HUD was what he was talking about.

Yeah, I love X-Plane but also would like more planes. It's a bit hard to land but I manage to land without crashing, just usually NEXT to the airport and not ON the strip. lol

  11. Yes this is just a small update by the look of it, and only adds to the map and adds dashboard instruments.
Here's some pics for those who haven't got the game...

The good thing is the problem I reported from the last update with the map, where the plane wouldn't change orientation with the map, is fixed.
The downside to these updates is, for a novice at least, it's all getting a bit complicated now. I personally have no use for the dashboard instruments, as I have no idea what the hell I am looking at. And the map now has all these codes and a big circle in the middle with it's own code, and again, I have no idea what it all means! I will write to Austin, and advise he updates his help guide on the official X-Plane iPhone site, and also put a link to that guide within the app itself for us newbies.

They also said that they now have ILS landing for instruments only landing. I wasn't able to understand the description on how to do this :).

They really need to give us a help system.

As far as I can see it, the iPhone version, while becoming a full-featured flight sim, has a different audience, a more casual audience, than the desktop version. While most people, who "play" the desktop game will know what to do with all the stuff they are adding to the mobile version, I have no clue.

I'm with you there pal. I have emailed Austin on our concerns, giving a link to this thread, and quoting our posts.

  14. On a side note, has anyone managed to land on the runway by the beach yet (the top one)? It's that small I am sure it's a runway for birds not planes! I try and try and always end up landing on the runway but keep stopping past it on the grass. My throttle and flaps are both down full way before I reach it- I don't know what else I can do.

I hope the dev finds some way to implement rudder control. I'd also like to see a simple auto-pilot function that allows me to go to the menu or set down the phone without pulling a 5g S-turn. I'd also like more interactivity with the flight map; setting custom waypoints, airports that will display detailed information when clicked on like ALTITUDE, weather, runway heading, etc. I keep hitting the ground early because there is no shadow and my Altimeter only displays sea-level altitude.

I hate to say it, but I wish there was a Flight COMBAT Simulator on the iPhone. Flying around is fun, but without an objective it just seems empty--especially when I'm used to Mach 1+ speeds. This of course is because I grew up on flight combat sims, starting with F-16 Combat Pilot for the 286. I'd settle for just that game on the iPhone, bad graphics and all.

    As for the instruments:

Top left is the Air speed indicator, read in Knots Per Second

Middle top is the horizon indicator (orientation of the plane to the horizon)

Top right is the Altimeter (altitude or height of the plane relative to sea-level, hands are read just like a clock--small hand being tens of thousands of feet, large hand being thousands of feet)

Though I don't recognize the lower left instrument I believe it is used in coordination with the bottom ILS instrument:

Lower left instrument being the Turn Coordinator (self-titled) tells you the rate of turn you must be at and the countdown in minutes till the turn must begin.

Bottom Instrument is one I recognize as the main ILS indicator. The arrow pointing towards the airport, with the middle section indicating the proper altitude for a landing approach. I could be wrong, it's been a while since I've used something other than a combat oriented Heads Up Display.

Bottom right is a simple rate of descent/ascent indicator. This is also handy for setting your glide path on a landing approach. I imagine it's also used for rules of ascent in consideration of your airspeed to prevent stalling, but it's just a guess.

Hope I helped more than I hindered.

Edit: As for the runway by the beach, have you tried a slower plane? I apologize if you have, but certain runways are just too short for certain planes, the dev may have thought of this, in order to force people to change it up every now and then.

  16. Thanks so much for your help Aeroflux- it's a shame we have to get this kind of information from a forum rather than proper instructions for the app. I will try and make more sense of the dials later (my daughter has pinched my Touch at the moment!).
Regarding the runway, sometime after my earlier post, I did try another plane (the Cirrus Vision) and successfully landed, with just under half the runway to spare!! So you are right, you need to be flying the right plane for that one.
Again, thanks for the help :)

can you turn off the HUD if you dont want it on?

  18. No, unless you change to an external view. To be honest, the HUD works fine and is actually helpful in keeping level etc, so I don't mind.

I'm glad they're updating the sim, but for non-pilots like me it's getting harder to use! haha... Just wish they'd add more planes and more locations.
