I'm kind of torn. The FTP mechanics are parasitic and I don't want to feed that trend. These games tend to be more time-filling-clutter than joy. On the other hand, I would like to see more games like xcom. Base building aside, just having cover and environmental options as well as different kind of shot choices alone adds depth to strategy games...the rpg mechanics and story hook me in even further. I guess xcom has enough success on its own that I don't need to worry about this game sinking or swimming, though. It is interesting that as players we have this influence on the market and have essentially a bigger game to play in. It reminds me of 10 years ago when buying organic was really much more of a statement, because you couldn't find it in mainstream stores...eventually, the tide turned...at least, it's more balanced
People are acting like game developers are exempt forever from taking ideas from other games. It's been done in other forms of media for eons. I think you have to accept it. I accept it. It doesn't mean I condone it, but I'm not going to rant about it for every single game. Some will enjoy games that bear a strong resemblance to another with features the original developers never added in for whatever reason etc. Some won't and will resent the developers of copied games for being greedy. If you don't like it, don't download it.
Then you should feel right at home in this thread. You'll find more complaints that this is not enough like XCOM than the opposite
Mehh I love TBS games and RPG's. Love X-COM but this is a wolf in sheeps clothing: I hate the sexism I hate the timers I hate that everything is available with IAP. The combat is shallow The base stuff is fun, but timers, I hate them Character advancement is fun, but timers to heal after battle, I hate them. And not much of a story either (one of x-coms flaws too actually)
Why on earth does every piece of media require women to be impossibly skinny with massive boobs. And then to go and frame the camera so they focus on her chest is just horrible. I'll happily give the Devs props for having female characters as leaders in the base, as well as female soldiers, that should be the norm. But this isn't soft core porn.
That isn't sexist. The female characters all share the same thin, busty character model but they are all actual characters that aren't just there to be eye candy. Sexy is not the same as sexist.
I wish I could find the article to reference this with, but until then you'll have to trust that I read this and not made it up... Some developers tend to go with female protagonists of your description because it's the only way to have "alpha" males play their game with lead as a female. This is a common complaint from many people though who feel that women are being objectified, however, is it not the same thing to feature a man as a protagonist in a game as muscle bound clone on Fabio yielding a doubled edged axe and only covered by a loin cloth? These are games, not a depiction of life, no one would want to play a game as a barbarian with glasses, a slight limp in his left leg and some extra baggage on the love handles and a receding hair line....
Ok, you're right it's not sexist. I really don't like the Objectification of Women, or men. As a dad of 2 sons and a daughter I hate that media pushes unrealistic images of people. Why can't ordinary people do extraordinary things? I understand that we are a long way from that being reality. I also realise that 5 years ago this game would have only 1 women in it, and the only thing she would be needing is a man to save her. We have come a long way, but there is a long way to go. There are more woman in the world than men, why ignore or turn away half the potential market?
That's a romantic way of looking at things-- believe me I feel the same way- but it's not realistic at all. We look at the media and entertainment as a way of escape from regular life, where you can be this amazing looking character and do these extraordinary things. It's the same way that children look up to and admire superheroes, it's the amazing things about them that draws the child's attention. The best way to look at these images, is that they are just ideals and personifications; We have to teach our children and ourselves to understand that these are not the standard.
Oh, don't get me wrong, the escapism is exactly the reason we play and I know that fully. But the Engineer in this is over the top.
Somewhat off-topic, but does the music during the controversial engineer shot remind anyone else of Shadowrun?
Who spoke that lie? This games lacks any real strategy, and the gameplay is like a crappy version of RAD soldiers.
This morning i saw this was updated for not losing resources when you get attacked in pvp, while you can gain resources by attacking. So they take away the most frustrating aspect of the base builder games, the loot stealing. This, along with a bunch of recent updates in the v.history, made me just download it again to see how it is now. But just for incorporating this mechanic in the base building game, where you can only gain from pvp and not get an empty base when you come back, i think Game Insight deserves MAJOR mention. Imagine playing your favorite CoC-type, and pvp only for fun or to gain resources, but be safe without shelling out cash cash cash to get back what you lost or god forbid, shield shield shield... Well done Game Insight!
I still play this. As far as freemium games go, this is the least offensive on my device. You really don't need to spend anything if you don't want to - and that's just why I did! The production values are extremely high, the story is reasonable, the developers really do try hard, listen to feedback and visibly care about their game. This, for me, is a hidden gem and deserves way more credit than it gets. There aren't many games like this on iTunes. Do yourself a favour and give it a try.
Critical bug? Critical bug? Im stuck on the skills screen at the point where Im guided to upgrade my sniper with trained shot. Frustratingly, it won't let me proceed. I'm on an iPad 10.5
