That should work. If it doesn't, make an appointment at the Apple store to talk to someone. You're probably still under warranty, since it lasts a year.

Seriously, anyone here who doesn't actually own an ipod touch and who hasn't been obliged to pay the ten bucks really has no reason to comment. We get it, it's only ten bucks, suck it up. It's the principle of the thing as well though. How many devices do you own where they say you have to pay $10 now to keep using it?

2.0 was an update I (and I bet most of us) paid for happily because it brought a ton of new features. 3.0 added almost nothing of value to the ipod touch, it's pretty much all iphone features. I paid for it because I had to to keep playing quite a few games and keep getting new apps, but why should I have had to? And why did it have to be $10? Why couldn't it have been $1? With 15 million or so iPod touches out there if a third paid to update they easily made 50 million dollars from us. Just to keep using something we already paid for. It's not like we didn't pay $200+ for the thing to begin with as well as handing them plenty of cash for apps through their store.

Again, it's not that big a deal, but I think we're entirely within our rights to at least ask a few questions of Apple here.

Well, there's the glitch in 3.0 (see here and here) with which you can have more than eleven app pages... I think that's worth the ten bucks alone. :D

Apparently this is why you have to pay for iPod touch OS upgrades:

    http://www.informationweek.com/news/personal_tech/ipod/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=218101418

I'm not sure why it's $10 rather than $1, though. I assume there's a legal reason for it, but you never know with Apple. After all, the first iPhone has that inexplicably recessed headphone jack that forces you to buy an iPhone-specific pair of headphones if you don't want to use the included earbuds.

That said, since iPod touch owners have been reluctant to upgrade, I'd guess that Apple is probably losing more than $10 per owner in terms of potential app sales lost. It's probably in their best interest to charge the least amount possible, so maybe they are.

Commercial operating system upgrades have almost universally cost money. Windows, Mac, OS/2, Novell.

It's a reasonably priced upgrade fee for a mobile operating system.

Suck it up and pay the ten dollars. Because let me tell you—as an iPhone owner that shells out $80 a month—I'm tired of hearing you guys bitch about it.

This is no longer true since the iPhone 3G.

How many devices do you have that receive regular software upgrades that add substantial new features? The only product aside from my iPhone is my Mac and neither of those are mandatory. I have friends with first gen iPhones that haven't upgraded (they probably haven't even synced in forever) and they are just fine. No one is making you upgrade to keep using your device.

I don't mind new games coming out that are 3.0 only. That is completely understandable. It's the games that I already have that go to 3.0 only that makes me mad. I have already paid for these games, it's like i'm having to pay for them again to use them.

Honestly if I could I would upgrade to 3.0. The problem is i'm in a situation where it is literally impossible for me to do so. I am a college student and I am doing an internship this summer. I have rented an apartment and since I am only here for the summer I do not have internet access at home. I have a desktop computer which means I don't have internet access, which means I can not upgrade to the 3.0 O.S. I however can use the wireless internet at my internship to buy new apps and upgrade my old ones.

I guess it just makes me mad that some of my apps are now unplayable, and I can't get a lot of the new apps, just because I am unable to upgrade to 3.0.

    McDonalds! French Fries anyone?
At that place... with those... people...
Yeah, i know. I have 3.0 update, but it seems unfair to charge $10 for the update! Its also ridiculous to make a game ONLY 3.0 compatible!

Thankfully it did work. And yes it's still under warranty but that's not necessary anymore.

That's right along the lines of what I'm thinking. And yes 'just buy it' posters please stop. It is a highly illogical argument. And $10 for the TOUCH (vs. iPhone) update is not at all a good deal. Please notice that distinction.

Tell me what the iTouch upgrade offers its users for that $10. Copy/paste and sideways keyboard? (typing/taking notes on the touch is stupid anyways, just get a netbook and keep your typing time efficient...plus copy/paste absolutely should have been an included feature in the first place). Are those two features worth $10 on the market?

Jesus, we're only asking why certain things have to be the way they are. Why do you think everyone should just shut up, bend over and take it when a corporation sticks its hands in your pocket?

As far as the OS argument-- putting aside the fact that the touch is an entertainment device and not a computer, when OS upgrades do come out and cost money they don't force you to buy it immediately and they don't tell you all new programs and updates will require the upgrade. You can still be running OS X 10.4 or XP2 today with the latest version of many programs. OS upgrades also tend to be full of new and presumably much better features, where minor incremental updates are free to download. And for iPod Touch users this update was minor at best.

By the way for $80 a month you also get a phone and data plan. Here's a hint-- most iPod Touch owners also have separate cell phones with $40-100 plans. That argument's complete B.S. as well.

Again, you have an iPhone? This is about iPod Touches. WTF do you care? There's a thousand other threads here appropriate for you.

I don't really understand the point of ranting about this.

If you don't want to pay $10 for 3.0, don't buy it, but don't be surprised when the App Store leaves you behind. I really would have figured everyone would have got complaining about this out of their systems when 2.0 was released and greed ol' $teve decided to juice the little guys for the upgrade.

This has to be the WORST argument EVER! There is a reason iPod Touch owners don't have an $80 a month bill... WE DON'T HAVE PHONE OR DATA SERVICE. So that point is COMPLETELY irrelevant to this whole topic.

Apple gets a cut of the monthly revenue from each iPhone subscriber.

As was mentioned, Apple gets a cut of a continuous revenue stream from the carriers. That cut, in part, covers the cost of iPhone firmware upgrades and satisfies the SOX act requirements. The Touch has no revenue stream behind it, hence the requirement to charge for firmware updates per the SOX.

If you want to blame someone, blame Enron. They were the scammers that kicked off the investigations (along with WorldCom, Tyco, and others) that ultimately led to the creation of the SOX act in order to stop future companies from trying to pull the same crap.

In short, it is quite relevant because it is the fact that you don't have a phone or data service that you get charged for upgrades. Apple must account for the material value of the firmware upgrade if it is significant enough to merit a fee as part of the conditions of the SOX act. They can do that by rolling its material value into the revenue stream from carriers for the iPhone. They can't do that for the Touch, so they have to charge a fee.

Also to squelch the inevitable "WELL WHY DOESN'T EVERYONE ELSE CHARGE FOR UPGRADES?!?!"

Everyone else (or, more accurately, most other companies that offer competing products) haven't found themselves under the magnifying glass of the SEC anywhere near as much as Apple has lately. Apple has to play by the books to avoid the costly consequences of being under SEC scrutiny and leaving regulatory wiggle room.

Ok Mindfield thank you for that information, I did not know that. But, I still have to say... what other "mp3" player do you have to pay to continue to use service for. Before everyone starts saying stuff, i understand the ipod touch is much more than an mp3 player, and I can still use it wihout upgrading, I just won't be able to use the app store anymore.

But consider this, one of the reasons I bought that ipod touch was because of the free wifi and the appstore. From what I remember there was never any clear mention that this would not be permanent, and I would have to pay to keep using this service. Had I known that it could have persuaded me from buying this device (of course it wouldn't have, i'm just using it as an example). Somehow, I feel like I have been wronged, and I am being forced into this paid upgrade for something that I had already paid for.

Solution: Instead of paying for anything, get paid. Sell your iPod on Craigslist, Ebay, or Nextworth and get a Zune.
