WW everything new being unnecessarily made to only work on 3.0 OS?

Easy for you to say how do I play the the apps that were not updated to 3.0?

I like the features but the upgrade broke too many of my apps.

I think Apple should have made a compatibility mode or done a better job making it work with more apps.

I have 821 app which are constantly being cycled in and out of my phone, the few I can think of that had 3.0 issues were fixed as soon as their updates got approved inside of two weeks after the firmware was released?

What apps are you using that are still broken?

Nearly all the 2.2.1 apps should work fine under 3.0 anyway unless they've used something undocumented or there's a very rare issue. Before 3.0 was released Apple started systematically testing all the apps against 3.0 and you'll notice they say (iPhone OS 3.0 Tested) next to their version number in iTunes.

The few apps that don't pass this test will supposedly get dropped from the store if they're not updated to be compatible, so you could pretty much consider them as dead apps anyway. In reality I suspect very very few apps will end up in this list and updates to 3.0 will improve things anyway.

    # of apps so far 1641 and counting, I just hate to see updates break games.

Yup. It looks like he didn't set up the links when he submitted the app. It's not showing as tested on 3.0, so I'm guessing it's one of the "to be zapped unless updated" ones. Hopefully the dev is checking his reviews and sees your comment as it's more than likely a pretty simple fix. More than likely it just needs compiling against 2.2.1 rather than the really old and creaky 2.0 it appears to be built against.

[edit]2.0 had a bug that caused the accelerometer to get stuck quite a lot btw. So it's possible that's all that's happening with it built as a 2.0 app under 3.0. You *might* be able to get it working again with a full restart and or re-install. It was a really random and annoying bug at the time![/edit]

One thing quite a few of us got caught with on 3.0 was a slight change to the audio system (that was done *after* the last beta we got to test) that caused mp3 playback to cause games to stutter. SlotZ Racer was one of ours that suffered from this, so it's been updated. From what I've seen most if not all of the games that had this issue have been updated by now.

There is a bug? If I remember on the firmware releases below 3.0 if you tried to update a game that required a newer firmware that you were not running you would get a pop up explaining you need to upgrade your OS in order to download the update. This no longer works in 3.0 due to a bug?

iPhone owners pay $80 a month, yet iTouch owners get irate at the thought of a $10 upgrade fee?

    Amazing.

By the way, operating system upgrades cost money. Dave pointed this out, but I just want to reiterate.

Windows generally runs about $100. Mac OS X, $129.

This has been true for as long as I remember. Hell, even going from MS-DOS 6.0 to 6.22 was a paid upgrade, and all that really did was change the name of DoubleSpace to DriveSpace.

I know $10 seems like a lot, but if you wait a little longer perhaps a tooth will fall out and you can put it under your pillow.

When you update via iTunes it doesn't know what devices you have, so can download all the free updates and end up with 3.0 versions if you don't check the info first.

Slightly off topic but I was fine with paying 10 dollars to update to 3.0. However, what I was not fine with was the update process that rendered my touch 2g useless. I was given an unknown error saying the iPod could not be updated. Then it was put into recovery mode and had to be restored. As I was restoring it, I recieved another unknown error saying the iPod could not be restored. I don't appreciate paying Apple money only for them to ruin my device. Fortunately I managed to recover back to 2.2.1.

Sorry to go off topic, but would you mind elaborating more on this? How bad was the stuttering, and what did you do to fix it?

    +1

Since I got the Touch (1st gen.) for playing games, that's the reason I upgraded to 3.0 - interested in what the 3rd gen. Touch will be like, but for now needed to upgrade to be able to enjoy all the new games coming out ;)

    Nope.

It would stall and lose one or more frames about once a second, which appears to have been typical for games with the same issue. The fix is to change the audio session category slightly depending on whether or not the iPod is already playing.

Johno: There's all sorts of random things that can once in a while mess up an update. Anything from a dodgy USB cable to your computer going to sleep mid update. Normally a straight recovery re-install will do the job but sometimes you have to give it a bit of a kick. If you've recovered back to 2.2.1 the update should work fine, although it's probably a good idea to re-download it in case a corrupted download caused your problem. If it fails again, hold down power + home buttons until it powers off, then keep them held for a second or so before letting go of the power button. iTunes should pop up an alert to say the device needs recovering and hopefully from that point the update should install ok.

Unfortunately I did all of that but after recovering to 2.2.1 I tried to update again and the same thing happened. So I've just given up and left it at 2.2.1.

Try putting it into DFU mode. Also make sure you're using the latest version of iTunes.

Well, before I did the update I downloaded the newest version of iTunes so that wasn't the problem I don't think. Instead of restoring to 2.2.1 I think I'll try to restore to 3.0 this time as a way to bypass the need of updating which seems to be the problem.
