A step up from Tower of Fantasy, and I’m finding the combat a little more satisfying than in GI. I’m a sucker for these kinds of games, and after hitting a wall on GI, I am eager to start on a new title. Other folks may or may not think that this brings enough to the table to make the commitment. I’ll report when I’ve made some progress… Samuel Dodee likes this. Game’s polished, especially the combat and the slick navigation in menus. Love that. Dodge and parry feel quite satisfying. GI and Honkai should learn the menu navigation from them. On the downside, the world doesn’t look that good tbh. I wish I could play this at 60fps without the game telling me it’s overloading my device. But the worst part, so… much… unnecessary… complex… lore. And they use words so casually as if expecting that the player has had a full course of history lessons on their world and people. But I guess that is par for the course for games like these. Need to play more to actually enjoy some gameplay, apart from running and talking. squarezero likes this. squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,716 1,240 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #4 squarezero, May 23, 2024 I get the same message on my iPhone 15 Pro, but all that’s happened is that my phone gets a little warm — even with maxed out settings. Battery drain seems reasonable. The lore thing is par for the course, as you say, though with the memory loss trope you’d think they’d take more time to explain things. I sorta kinda get it; if I get hooked, I’ll probably dig up more info. Rocksaint likes this. I tried out 60fps, and even though it wasn’t heating up that much, I thought well, the game must be warning me for a reason. So went back to 30. Yeah, that’s my problem. I mean if you are gonna make the player spend so much time in the story and dialogues, might as well take it slow and explain things. Or better yet, let the player encounter them during gameplay and then attach a story to it. Nintendo are brilliant at this. squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,716 1,240 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #6 squarezero, May 26, 2024 Are they, really? Personally, I found both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom pretty unengaging, which is why I gave up on both of them. But I’ve never been a fan of that kind of open-ended storytelling (at least in games). I’ve now put about three hours into Wuthering Waves. The story is coming into shape; it helps that there are side missions that are much more human-scaled — a grandfather looking for his grandson in the frontlines, for example — which makes the whole thing much more relatable. Don’t get me wrong: there’s still plenty of anime nonsense here, as well as a fair amount of Chinese political tropes that some folk may read as propaganda (Hoyoverse games tend to approach authority with a lot more skepticism). But I’m getting the same positive vibes I got from my first 50 hours or so with Genshin Impact (before I hit my skill wall and started feeling woefully underpowered). The combat is sharp, with enough depth to keep things interesting but not overwhelming. The environmental puzzles are decent, and the world keeps offering interesting sights to go and explore. I think it performs better than GI, though perhaps the graphics are a tad less impressive. @Rocksaint I’ve had no problems running the game with maxed out graphics at 60 FPS. It also defaulted to 30 FPS/medium settings with my iPhone 15 Pro, but gameplay is a lot better at the higher frame rate. There’s also been some social media grumbling about performance issues and bugs, but I have yet to encounter anything even close to major. So far this has been a polished experience. I should note that there is no controller support at the moment, which I know is a dealbreaker for many. Touch controls are good enough for me, though people should make sure to change the default to free-floating joystick. Tl;DR This is highly recommended to Genshin Impact fans who can deal with Gacha mechanics. Rocksaint likes this. (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
