Yesterday I was banned for a day, the reason being that telling a developer to check my PM is not permitted.

First, I looked in the rules against just to make sure it indeed was against the rules (I had no knowledge of that being illegal here), and sure enough, I found that NO WHERE in the rules.

Second, I find that an immediate one-day ban for doing that to be completely ridiculous. Surely the moderators here have better things to do than banning a member like me who has no intentions of doing wrong on the forums here simply because I told a developer to check their PM, which as stated above, isn't even in the rules here at TA.

Third, did the moderator even KNOW what I PM-ed the developer about? It was an urgent question regarding their game that I need to know within a week. Obviously developers are very busy and the thread (Tiny Tower) is QUITE active, so if I just tell them in the thread, I doubt I could get a response in time.

I am very upset about this and would like to know why this happened.

Srsly mods?!?!? Getting banned because of telling a dev that they need to check their PM is very ridiculous.

Do random, unwarranted, ridiculous, retarded bans happen a lot around here?

    inb4lock/delete.

Agreed with the TC though. Also I heard KiddToKmart got an infraction for recommending a game to someone via PM. A game he wasn't involved with in regards to development or publishing. Go figure.

While not frequently, I hear of them from time to time. Sometimes mods will justify you with a response to threads like these, but I wouldn't expect it brah =(

Wow, I never knew about this until now. Isn't that a bit unfair though? That mods can ban you for these minor things that aren't even the rules, and you can't do anything about them?

To be fair, it's reasonable that some rules might not get written down but should still be enforced. They only added the "no ad-blocker discussion" rule after I got put in time-out for it, I guess it just hadn't occured to them before.

This case is different though, I fail to see anything wrong with what you did.

To be fair, how do you know the Dev didn't report it? I'm not saying what you did was annoying (or wrong) but I can see how one might think that.

    It was reported.

Anyway, we try to make TouchArcade a good environment for developers to contribute to, and needlessly pestering them isn't something that's very conducive to this. Being put in time out might have been a little extreme, but all the moderators are trying to do is discourage developers from getting badgered for things. Private message notifications are very prominent. They'll check them when they get a chance. :)

As far as getting all up in arms against TouchArcade moderation, here's something to consider: On average, we get in the neighborhood of a few dozen post reports a day. 99.9% of the time those are handled quickly by our limited and volunteer moderation staff without issue... But what people chose to focus on instead is that 0.1% of reports that might not have been handled in the best way with all kinds of self proclaimed internet justice experts coming out of the woodwork to weigh in. Our moderators aren't iterations of RoboCop following a set of prime directives, they're humans who make mistakes and (sometimes) might not make the best call.

At the end of the day, why not focus on the 99.9% of time where spam, stupid posts, and rule breaking is handled quickly and appropriately? Remember, this is just a forum on the internet. Is being removed from it for a day or having a post disappear really as bad as you guys are making it out to be?

Since we're posting in a topic the mods are likely eyeing up, I'll ask: why wasn't my request to have this rather blatant attack on me deleted upheld?

I can take an insult, but that post breaks a ton of rules.

Well, I understand there's just some things that are just common sense that you shouldn't do, and obviously while unwritten it might constitute a ban. But like you said, I see nothing wrong with what I did.

I'm not trying to start a revolt against the moderators, and I have been made aware that they do this all completely for free. I do support their efforts and even applaud them- TA is one of the best forums I've ever used in terms of friendliness and peacefulness. And I understand there's no "justice system" for this stuff, but again, like I just said, use some common sense! TA is a pretty good forum and there is no need for moderators to be dropping the hammer on us regular users for such minor issues, or in this case, no issue at all.

And I'm not mad at the fact that a post disappeared or that I was banned for a day. It's the NATURE of why I was banned that is my major complaint.

Yeah. That post was quite mean.

I think these are the things that "TheCatsMeow" broke:

    - Don't insult people - if you can't keep yourself from insulting others, you don't belong here.
    - Please keep language "clean".
    - Keep threads on topic - obviously things can stray onto related topics, but we've seen threads stray into personal and irrelevant topics..

This happens at all sites (yes also the one I am ed chief at) ;).

Mods need to act swift at times, sometimes bad calls (or new calls) are made. They don´t always seem fair, but it happens everywhere. They are volunteers and doing a great job keeping this site a pleasant place to stay.

That the ed here joins this topic and it isn´t just deleted, nuked etc. instead shows that this site and the staff is actually interested in their readers as more than just the odd quick buck. :)
