So, I finally decided that the game I thought about for a long time will become a reality. The point is, with an ever-changing appstore, will people actually play my game in the end? That's why I've written down what I'd like to make, and see what the biggest community of iOS gamers thinks. The game itself can be basically described as an rts in a 2D world. You call down troop transports, vehicles and score points, that you can use to buy upgrades, special attacks and more. You can also take control of only 1 person, giving commands to a squad of 5 through the touch screen (touch a building or other obstacle to place a sniper, give the command to take a vehicle and provide support) and the points you rack up then can be used to buy attack like air support, missiles, defense turrets and vehicles using touch controls (guiding a missile from the air to ground using your finger, tap air vehicles to let them fly to a new position). I want an easy to pick up and addicting game, yet have deep gameplay mechanics. If anyone has constructive criticism or ideas to make the basic concept of the game better, let me know. Spoiler Also, if it was stupid to even make this topic, let me know too
Well the first thing you gotta ask yourself is if you can script/program it and if not, do you know someone that can script something to this level? It's a little on the complex side so you will need more skilled/committed programmers and graphic designers which of course cost money. If none of these things are an issue, then yes I would play this. It sounds like an interesting game and I would def. give it a try.
When you say score points, that can mean a lot of things. You can be very creative with how exactly people score points in your game. Killing an enemy from the maximum distance allowed to the sniper, killing simultaneous enemies with a well placed grenade, completing a mission without having any of your troops die etcetera Just throwing ideas out there. You can have a little "Mission Performance" grading system implemented where many little factors give you extra points. Those are always nice little rewards in games
Perhaps have a grading system at the end of each level (if any). For example, grade A to D depending on how well you did or how many difficult things you pulled off, like multikills or longshots. Also, it would be nice to see some controllable air support. Maybe a helicopter that turns your screen into the cockpit and lets you see and gun down enemies and their support, sorta like the chopper gunner from mw2 or black ops. Consider a line drawing option for giving commands to your soldiers? Like draw a route from a soldier to a turret, he walks down that route and uses the turret. Be sure to include many unexpected weapons and equipment, like claymores, gas grenades, sentry guns and perhaps care packages that randomly give you a range of support, from ammo to the most powerful support you decide to include. Hope that gave you some ideas.
So basically it's the little things you need to worry about. The difference between me buying your game and a similar one may be the difference between a single feature. Make sure every little thing is accounted for. The app store is a vicious competition and consumers are reckless. Be prepared for this task or else your ideas will fall to the void... So yeah, sounds like a fun game.
Your first paragraph is all dreary and cautious but you ended your thoughts with a little positive quip on the game haha I love it
It took me a minute to realize you were talking about a game called "Trenches", thought you were talking about the competitive nature of the app store using a World War I metaphor.
Hahah, my mistake! For those who don't know what the game Trenches is, here's the link to it http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/trenches/id340769953?mt=8
