my 16 gb iphone 3G costed about the same price.
We also have cheaper options with contracts but they are not very good in Italy. That way I kept my old prepaid SIM card.

I concur with the most sensible option. Went from a $600 Palm Treo/case (few years back) to a Verzion Prepaid $20 phone with a $15 monthly airtime card and don't regret it.......with money saved I can afford the next generation Touch and a few of the newer games to boot.

Soo a prepaid cell phone aint that bad. There just phones. not everyone needs a $600 Palm Treo unless ur are a freaken millioniar or a nig bussiness person.

    Just my 2 cents.

I'm confused. Let's say my family uses T-Mobile, and I want the $599 iPhone 3G. Can I go to my local AT&T store and get one? Or do I have to like, start a new phone number with AT&T?

I'd totally flip out $600 for an iPhone if I could use it on T-Mobile without all the rigamarole involved in jailbreaking and unlocking. Total cost of ownership of the iPhone is something like $300 for the initial purchase then $2500 over two years in cell phone bills.

With T-Mobile I can get almost the exact same cell phone plan for half what AT&T costs, so while you're paying an additional $300 initially, you're saving close to $1250 in cell phone bills over the same amount of time.

But as it is, right now, the extra $1250 I'm paying with AT&T is worth not having to deal with waiting for the jailbreak scene to figure out how to jailbreak each firmware release. I want 3.0 the day it comes out, not when the jailbreakers get around to figuring out how to update and unlock.

True but still you know. I'd pay 300$ max for a iphone 8gb with no contract and I would use it as pre paid (if possible) with a data plan.......... would cost less than a contact.

My Touch has served me well as a PDA. It carries all my info/contacts/e-mails/passwords/checkbook/shopping and to-do lists (within an encrypted program of course), my alarm clock, calendar appts reminder. Need I go on? For just being a "toy" it serves me well other than gaming playing.
Who would want to own a device that interrupts game playing with incoming phone calls anyway?(w/some games) Sigh....that's ok, we Touch owners know that to have our devices is a symbol of a TRUE gamer. (j/k on the last part, think iPhone's are just as good as the Touch)

Well, you'd pay for a family plan so it would be something like $2500 for your first phone, and an additional ~$500 or so for every additional iPhone. That number is probably low because I'm not sure how much you have to pay in taxes on the additional lines, but still. It wouldn't be that much more expensive, comparatively.

I was assuming unlimited texting in my calculations, it was based off my monthly bill which is about $105. A family of five is generally flipping out thousands of dollars a month between a mortgage, car payments, food, and everything else a family requires. Cell phone bills are kind of a drop in the bucket in comparison.
