I'm at the sticky part of the year halfway inbetween the release times of the old iPhone 4 and the upcoming iPhone 5 in June/July. I want to upgrade from my 1st gen touch and I have the money, but I don't want to get the iPhone 4 if the iPhone 5 is going to overthrow everything like the previous iPhone. What do you know about rumoured upgrades coming to the new iPhone (Any extreme hardware that will allow for games not even possible on the iPhone 4?) and would you recommend buying it now or just waiting 6 months?
Well if apple follows its trend they do since the first iphone release the iphone5 will be "just" an update. More ram more speed but nothing significant better. Maybee 1080p recording along with a new higher res camera or something along that line.. but nothing that will be a dealbreaker for an iphone4 now. You can always opt for an ipod touch 4rd gen now and go with the iphone5 next year, if you dont need the spec diffs between the iphone and touch
Yeah there isn't much from the technical side they could improve; it's already their top-of-the-line hardware. They could add more RAM, or make the CPU faster, but it already has so much headroom, it would only be for marketing purposes. They probably can't do anything more with the display since it's already at the technical limit (IPS screen, insane PPI). They'll surely fix the antenna issue.
Thanks guys I just had a look at some rumours. They range from the obvious antenna issue fix (Even though it isn't a problem in Australia), a larger 3"7 screen compared to the 3"5 and changing from an Intel Infineon chip to a Qualcomm chip. I have no idea what that might mean for the device though
My thoughts exactly. I would go with the iPhone 4 or iPod touch 4th gen. I don't think 5th gen iPhone is going to be too much of an upgrade.
I highly doubt the screen size will change, Jobs has been pretty adamant about keeping it consistent, and we know the larger sized Android phones have done little to Apple sales. Infineon over Qualcomm (CDMA manufacturer) will have little influence over the average user, it's a different network chip, that's it - so the rumor of this change has to reflect the other rumor that Apple is bringing the iPhone to the Verizon's CDMA network - which has been a rumor forrrreverrrrrrrrrr (sandlot). However since we are already halfway into the life cycle of the iPhone 4, I would seriously consider waiting it out. The 3g to 3gs was a big bump in terms of video/photo quality as was the 3gs to 4. Personally I'd hate to buy into the device and then be bummed 6 months later. The worst is hearing about people buying into the iPad now because of the holiday hoopla. I tried to convince my cousin to just wait until January's iPad keynote to see the upgrades they will be putting on the new iPad due to the leaked screenies of cases in China, but she was insistent on getting it. If it does come out with a front facetime cam, everyone's Star Trek tablet fantasy will come true.
Kinda early to have any solid rumors about the 5th gen iPhone so most of what you've read is speculation. I have a friend who is in the same predicament. Makes it a tough decision since it is smack dab in the middle of the product cycle.
