Is there any point whatsoever getting a DS if you have an iPhone/iPod touch? Since both are touch-based, (or have controls) and the AppStore is far cheaper than buying DS games. So is any point getting one?

i don't think so, the iPhone is FAR more powerful than the 3DS, so it doesn't makes much sense to buy the Current DS, and if you take in count that apple upgrades the devices every year and in two years we might have an iPhone as powerful as the current consoles... well so much for the DS... and yes, the iPhone games price range has no comparison. so IMO its not worthy to buy a DS...

plus the appstore has a much wider game genre range and more innovative gaming variety than the DS! you can have from a mindless time killing to a real hardcore game! and the DS doesn't have many hardcore games...

the biggest issue by not getting yourself a DS or any other nintendo device is you can't play nintendo games anywhere else.
hardware is nothing. the core value is idea. so far, nintendo is the best.

If you like Japanese games and don't care about graphics then I suppose it's worth getting. But for most other genres, iOS games come out on top.

But some people (like me) don't like the games for the DS. I hate any anime/Japanese game and I couldn't care less about Nintendo Dogs, Brain Training, Pokemon or Mario.

Also known as Game Dev Story and that stuff is so addictive it's the only Japanese game you'll ever need.

It's worth waiting for the 3DS. Too many amazing games listed for it to get a regular DS in the meantime. No one can dislike that many games, and as for iPhone being more powerful... that means nothing until the games can match the DS's in depth. Try as they might, it still hasn't happened, and when it starts happening, it won't be happening enough.

Again, it depends which games you like. If you like Japanese games, such as 2D sprite based RPGs, sidescrollers, fighting games, puzzle games and kart racers, then great, the DS offer games in those genres with more depth and are generally superior to the iOS equivalent.

But if you're like me and dislike the genres I mentioned above then I honestly think that iOS is the better option. Of the handheld platforms I've played (PSP, DS & iPhone), the best platform for FPS, TPS, Racing, 3D RPG games is the iPhone by far (in my opinion). In gameplay, graphics, controls and content. Well maybe not quite so much content, but games cost like 1/8th the cost of DS/PSP games with sometimes just as much content.

What kind of games do you like? I recommend waiting for the 3DS. The DS's games have more depth. Games do cost more, but they last much longer.

This should actually be placed under negative, I just bought my iphone 4 last summer, and i plan on having it for at least 2 more years, and I know that the vast majority of iOS users are in a similar boat(if not with the iphone4, with the iphone3gs etc). The fractured nature of the iOS is a serious issue concerning development, updates, and so on.

I'm speaking generally. Most people like what the DS has to offer, if you don't that's your own issue to deal with. On the whole if someone says "is the DS worth it" without giving any more specifics you can look at the sales and popularity and say "Yes it is".

The iPhone probably is better than DS for FPS, TPS and racing games, but if you ask me that just means they haven't been done right on a portable device yet. DS puts out the stuff that works, the rest are still confined to consoles until someone nails it. Right now we either have promising gameplay with shockingly short length, or drawn out length with dull and repetitive gameplay.

In general, DS games are usually better than iOS, and 3DS will have some nice titles. And as for iphone having better fps games, i disagree. None of the iphone games could beat Metroid Prime Hunters especially for online play.

Wait for the 3DS my friend. You'll be able to play the incredibly DS software there too, not to mention the new games made specifically for the system.

If you want cheap games that are relatively well made, considering how cheap they are, then the iDevice will continue to destroy any and all competition. If you want the best games available, regardless of the price, I have no doubt that the 3DS and PSP2 will destroy the iDevice when it comes to offering a complete gaming experience.

The duel-stick physical controls will allow the PSP2 to become the best handheld platform for FPS gaming. Well, that and PS3-quality graphics. But if you've played Metriod Prime Hunters, or any of the last 3 Call of Duty games, or either of the Dementium games, or Moon, or even the new Goldeneye, you would not be so quick to annoit the iDevice as being a better FPS system than the DS.

You have an iPhone 4 so you should be alright for the 2 years you want to keep it for. The big leap in graphics especially means it will hold up well for a long time. Older devices, particularly 3rd gen have been severly hurt with the 4th gen.

Thanks replies, yeah maybe I'll skip getting a DS, if say it's a distinct minority of games I'd be getting one for. The 3DS maybe interesting.

    @thumbs07 -

The current DS lets you play all the old gameboy Advance games, which you can find really inexpensively. The new 3 DS won't have that capability. But, depends on your interests.

The biggest reason that I continue to enjoy my DS is battery life - I can literally play all day long with a charged DS, or multiple sessions for several hours, and it stays charged. A couple of hours is all I can get out of my iPhone.

The two latest DS models don't have a GBA slot.

    OMG! Look everyone! 3D
It must be so much better because it's 3D! Even if the controls are made of cheese and it has to be played upside-down and it's powered by it's own mini nuclear reactor which gives your unborn child 3 heads, who cares? IT'S 3D!!!
