Aww man, it's not Halo's fault!! I'm 25 and love me some Halo....But yes he is quite a gigantic tool.
im more of a COD guy myself but you gotta respect where these games came from, this was the blueprint.
Oh dude trust me....your preaching to the choir. I've been playing FPS since they were born. Catacombs 3D baby!!!
You should read John's blog post about the creation of the iPhone port. He talks specifically about how preserving the original integrity of the original franchise is important. The devs were the ones who originally thought it was important to remain as true as possible, that's why me and many others were surprised when we saw changes to some of the graphics. While I'm at it, it wouldn't hurt to talk about the difference between graphics changes and updates. if they wanted to take some of the original textures and make them look nicer that's one thing. But to take things like the pistol and create brand new graphics I personally think that's another. Thanks for the tip about removing certain UI elements, it's not very obvious but it is effective Great game, I hope my criticism is seen as constructive. Nobody likes to see an awesome project like this take a step backward, and to some it's step forward, but letting the people choose which is better sounds like an ideal solution.
I can certainly understand the ideals of those wanting to preserve the legacy of Wolfenstien. I'm 32 and believe it or not this is the only version of the game I've played. I do find the game getting more of my play time than almost any other. Really, to me, the gameplay is solid. As long as they don't change the that I'm good
The Mac OS port of Wolfenstein 3D was closer to the 3DO version than it was to the DOS version. It also had different music. Did I like this change back then? Not really, but at least I could pick and choose between them as I had the hardware. I say they should go with a full-on port of the Classic Mac/3DO version seeing as how even the "original" iphone port had censored music in the intro screens.
While you're at it, could you include an option to turn the sprite-blurring off, at least on the enemies? Nothing against bilinear filtering, but that's just not Wolfenstein. Having the option to play it pixelated like in the days of yore would be win.
Or make the sprites hi-res to fit better the new hi-res textures. BTW, I like the updated graphics. But I think it should be possible to switch between a retro version and a hi-res version (incl. new sprites!). At the moment it is kind of inconsistent - pretty modern textures, but ugly old sprites.
It has already been stated earlier in the thread that the next update will feature the ability to access the original low-res textures.
wolfenstein has been draining my battery like crazy lately. been playing it a lot.. once you get used to a good control scheme it's perfect.
Especially since it went on sale, as soon as I saw that I bought it. It's very addicting and I can't wait for Doom. I'm sure this will last me until it comes out though.
