Hey, after much deliberating I decided to buy Wolfentein. I already played the pc version and wasn't much into it. But, decided to give this a try as it's the only real FPS so far. And, who won't like id software right? Boy, the more I played it, the more i like it. It really works fine for the iphone. And, to be able to play it anywhere, it's like heaven! I can't wait for Doom and Quake. I know, you can get it free for jb iphone but, I'm not into jb and I prefer to pay for my purchase. Hey, we should pay for their efforts and hope this will really help them in creating a from-the-ground-up new FPS for the iphone! So far, so good! Thumbs up for id software!
I just got around to downloading this game. I'm almost embarassed by how many years ago I used to play it (on the commodore 64?). Anyway, kudos to Id for nailing the control scheme. The retro graphics are perfect and gameplay is silky smooth. I have played (and deleted) almost every FPS released for the iPhone. This one is the best - by far - from the moment you start you are immersed in the game. From a strictly control perspective, this should easily be the standard by which all FPS on the iPhone should be judged. Some may want more modern graphics - and I could understand that wish - but speaking as someone who played the original wolfenstein's and the numerous progeny - this is just great.
Is this game worth getting if you haven't played the original? I am a big fan of fps shooters if it means anything...
Yes easily, you just won't cherish it as much as if you had played it back then. Still, it's the shooter with the best control scheme, IMO. Part of it has to do with the fact that there's no looking up/down, but still...
Hooray I finally got this last night and have to say that everything that has been said about the controls is true!! They're perfect! However those of you who never played wolfenstein may not love the graphics or animations. If you are old enough to have played doom at least, you'll probably like this game. PS. Anybody remember Catacombs 3D?
wow thanks for that informative post. you added a lot of information about Wolfenstein 3D to this thread. If you don't want the game then wait, Doom will be out soon enough, I'm just not sure what you were accomplishing by posting that.
Please do us a favour and say something substantial Mate, we appreciate you making trying to make a contribution to forums, but so far, most of the posts you've made across ALL OF THIS FORUM really don't say much at all. So what if you would rather have doom? Question is why? Why not Wolfenstein3D? You can say you preferred the hell theme. You can say you love the BFG. You can criticise Wolf's graphics or Nazi theme. But your post says absolutely nothing worth reading. You might as well say "I love coco pops" because that's about as relevant as what you added. We don't mind contributions, but please make it relevant and preferably say why. PS. Please remove your signature. You're begging for a promo code. And that's not in accordance with the Forum Rules here "- Only developers may post promo code giveaways. - Don't beg/ask for promo codes or beta testing"
I'm sorry this isn't on topic but for all you doom lovers and wolfenstein lovers check out the game catacombs 3d which is the prototype for both games. Just look at the demons from doom, they're basically pulled right from the game. Wolfenstein might be remembered as the first FPS, but the true Grandfather of Id games and their fps's is Catacombs.
The original Castle Wolfenstein 3D and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein came out for the C64 (and Apple II, Atari 8-bit). Wolf3D is only thematically based on the original Wolfentein games; the gameplay is as different as it's possible to get, never mind the graphics. The original Wolf3D and Spear of Destiny came out only on PC in 1992. Wolf3D was later ported to various consoles (3DO, Jaguar, Game Boy Advance, SNES, and one or two others). As for Catacomb 3-D series, yes, they were the prototype for Wolf3D. It was developed by id Software after all, and published through SoftDisk. Its core engine was later enhanced and used to make Wolf3D. If you really want to get picky about the first game to use 3D texture mapping in a first person perspective, you can go all the way back to 1985's Alternate Reality. It was an RPG, not an FPS, but it did use a very primitive form of texture mapping for smooth forward/backward movement.
All of that is true however catacombs gave us the now standard "visible hand" view. Also I was mainly refering to Id software, and Wolfenstein's rep as the first.
I'm not a reviewer on a game site, but I do my share of writing for my marketing job. But Wolfenstein definitely brings back the memories. I agree with you that the controls are done fairly well in this game...very faithful port which is the way I like it.
Ah yes. I hope your job is serving you well and I know it tires you out. If the controls were awful in Wolfenstein, it would have messed up big time.
nice review candy, funny screenshots too. i was never into wolfenstein as much as the graphically amazing doom but this game whets me appetite for a bit more old school blood!
Welcome to TA! Thank you very much. I was hoping that it would push people who were on the fence about getting it into picking it up. I agree Doom def was a big step up graphically. I can't wait when that comes out which I hope is soon! Always fun to revisit the old school game especially to kick Nazi behind!
yeah, well what can i say!? i kick nazi butt but i prefer to kill daemon. damn, i feel the urge to spend 5.99$ (canadian price) - speaking of which, do you think since the name is wolfenstein 3d classic, that there will eventually be a remake in quake 3 engine? you just seem so full of knowledge...
Thank you. It's very possible! The wolfenstein engine was freely made available to developers last week, so we might see some retro looking fps games built from it. iD software themselves, said that Doom is coming in the near future so we can only hope that a game with the Quake 3 engine will come our way!
the next game will be Spear of Destiny and word on the street is it's a go. There are no plans to develop new wolf games for the iphone. We will get Wolf RPG. I don't think we will see castle wolfenstein or anything advanced on a higher engine.
