there not really bad, they are just basic, although this was bound to be a common discussion luckily gameloft redid the Oregon Trail, because if they didn't everyone would have said the graphics sucked then too. i am glad the graphics did not get changed, I would have been dissapointed and probably wouldn't have purchased the game.
Who knows where FPS games would be at today without them, but that's not really the point. Their stuff recently hasn't been nearly as good, and when I say recently, I mean the last decade. The reason their classic games haven't aged so much is because of how brilliant they were. Doom/Doom 2 and Quake 1 were just phenomenal games. I don't say what I say out of disrespect, it's just a pity that the gameplay of the titles that have come out of the company has taken such a dive since then.
quake III arena was badass. it might be my favorite game id made. the way you could play capture the flag with the bots that could get tough on the hard level was amazing. Some of the maps were just awesome as well. Although thinking back to quake 2 online capture the flag with the grappling hook was just awesome as well. crf was my favorite part of any of the quake games and II was the only one to have it built in to play on your own. I can't write off qIII i really enjoyed it.
Long time lurker here have a quick question (might of missed it in this huge thread). Did they add any sort of medal, achievement, or stat tracking besides the end level recap? I didn't notice anything in the above screen shots. I will probably end up buying this either way though. I have fond memories of playing this on my packard bell computer with a 486 cpu! It was one of the first pc games I actually had at home.
no. they didn't nothing was added only changed the health packs logo from a cross to a heart, also some music is missing, the theme and the menu music otherwise everything is the same for the most part
Quoted for the truth. Amazing controls. If new graphically improved fps games can be made with similar controls id be in heaven. This is one of the best releases because it gives me faith that fps's can work on this platform.
the reason this game works so well is because its all on the same plane, if we had to look up and down, we wouldn't feel the same. this works so well because we don't have to "aim"
I think so. When you get to the elevator, you discover you have been timed and compared to a 'par' time. I was way over so I didn't get squat, but you might if you are fast. I dunno.
meeting par does not do anything for the player, it is simply just a mark to beat like in the other games.
I really love the smooth controls of this game. There is hope for FPS This game brought back good memories and I am enjoying taking my time in the missions. Great classic game.
Well yeah but would it be that hard to implement another axis on the turning pad Im not sure how that would work but i hope for it. I remember playing zod's doom port and it was somewhat playable(multiplayer against someone on computer). I dont remember the control scheme for that but a blend between these two might work.
Finally got to play it some and it is AWESOME. Just pure awesomeness. The defaul controls are amazing. THIS is what iDevice gaming should be all about. Now you people see why I wanted G-d Mode? Isn't it just pure awesomeness?
I put it to the test and it appears you are correct. I am just so good I haven't been getting shot and I didn't notice until now.
Very impressed with this one so far although have noticed a couple of anomalies, 1) Action sounds occasionally dissapear leaving me playing with just music (fixed by clicking home and then re-enterring app at same point) 2) Using the same technique as above, all items and health, treasure etc re-spawn? Like the choice of control schemes and am very interested how id will deal with the additional looking around of the quake games - this is a great start from them. Also great that you only need 2.0 firmware upwards - good call as will maximise sale potential
I'm digging Wolfenstein and digging more that this is the first of many id games to make its way to the iPhone. There's been a severe lack of full fledged games and as we're seeing announcements from EA to bring not only Tiger Woods but NBA Live, Madden and SSX (Sweeeeet) to the iPhone, it means its maturing beyond 5 minute "flash" games. Wolfenstein really is a must buy. I wish at some level they'd used some of the Mac/Jaguar improvements like the better soundtrack, backpacks for more ammo storage and cheesy flame thrower and rocket launcher. Can't have everything I guess Perhaps with the Quake Engine being ported we'll see some other classic quake engine based games like Return to Castle Wolfenstein? Call of Duty? Star Wars Jedi Knight 2? American McGee's Alice? Good times for us iPhone gamers...
im loving this too im even saving 5 bucks 4 doom and buying a new itunes card when quake 3 and quake original come out
The reason for Wolfenstein 3D to be limited to 4 directions (forward, backward, left, right) is the processing power of that time. It was revolutionary because it made 3D possible and the only way it could be done on CPUs during that time was limiting it to 2 axis. What you are looking for is Doom. That one will be released later this years so don't fret, you will get your third axis. Besides, you don't need more than 2 axis in Wolfenstein. There is no higher or lower ground.
