Windows 7 vs Mac

If you miss Windows, just dual boot it on your new mac.

BTW, I'm a PC. Since the early 90s. So, no fan boy crap here. I'd really like a macbook air, though!

 

I guess I'm slightly biased since the three PCs I had eventually died from mechanical failure, but hey, my aluminum, unibody design MBP hasn't failed me in the year I've had it, which is more than my last machine can say. The OS is another thing, Windows just felt iffy, constantly freezing, popping up a red ALERT notification every once in a while because of some vague error that only happens to 1 in 100,000. Then there's the jumble of hardware and specs to keep track of, wondering if a program or game will run on your computer... ugh, I prefer the simpler and to the point Mac. If money's any concern, Apple computer's always retain a high resale value as long as you take care of it. And in the long run, yes, they're a little pricey, but IMO it's worth it considering how long they last. This computer will probably see me 'til sophomore year of college. Maybe beyond.

Awesome, macs haven't had an issue in a year, and only 2 in the past 3 years. Pretty good track record.

 

I'm no expert on Macs, have only owned a Macbook Pro for a little over a year, and haven't really used it a whole lot, but it's a decent machine.

Really though what it comes down to is what you want to use it for. The PC is and probably always will be my primary machine because I do a lot of different things in a lot of different programs some of which Mac simply has no proper equivalent for. I have not seen anything even remotely come close to FLStudio. (Don't even say Garage Band. Vastly underfeatured by comparison.) There's just no way I can live without FLStudio and ReFX Nexus.

I'm also a big gamer, and while the Mac just got Steam, it's only a start, and a relatively small one (though a good one) at that. Plus, even the highest-end Macs are underpowered compared to how far you can deck out a PC. With Macs you're stuck with the hardware Apple themselves support. My main PC has a nice AMD Phenom X4 965, Radeon 5870, 8 gigs of fast RAM, 2.5TB storage, SoundBlaster X-Fi Elite Pro, and various other bits. I can't get a comparable rig with a Mac. I can't even come close.

I am also quite fond of Windows 7. I completely skipped that bloated and bugged-out bastard child called Vista and stuck with XP until 7 had a couple of public beta releases under its belt and was stable enough to give me time to assess its features and capabilities. I liked it. A lot. I bought as soon as it hit retail shelves and I've been very happy with it. It's a worthy successor to XP and enough to make me forget that Vista was to XP what Windows ME was to 98.

However, my needs are not the needs of the average user. I have rather demanding requirements for the sort of stuff I do, and Macs do not fit that bill.

That said, Mac OSX is rather nice. It's fast, efficient, fairly easy to learn, has some nice built-in applications, is pretty stable, and has some nice features. It has its shortcomings too, but that's not unexpected. It's a nice machine with some nice features, but it's not what I'd call a machine for power users. It's a good system to know, and it does what it does very well, as long as what you need isn't beyond what it's capable of. You may also find that, if you're something of a power user and like to get all up in its business, a lot of its Linux roots show when it comes time to do things like install drivers or fix problems, and there will be an adjustment period while you learn how things work a little differently on Macs.

So my advice: Before you make your decision, first assess what you'll be doing on your laptop and what you expect it to be capable of. That should help make your decision easier.

First off, disclaimer: I am what one would possibly consider an Apple fan, although I am one for good reasons. I have OS 10.6 Snow Leopard and Windows 7 on my iMac.

In my experience, Macs are much quicker, more reliable, and user-friendly. They do have the usual problems of hard-drive failure and so on, but the entire experience is just so much quicker and more streamlined. Windows 7 is certainly a huge improvement over Vista (which I found ran better than reputed on my iMac anyway) in terms of stability, however it just can't match the Mac. Somehow, Windows seems to run faster on Macs. Must come from not being loaded with bloatware on install.
In terms of longevity, Macs tend to have a longer average lifespan than PCs. The main thing to remember when purchasing a Mac is that Apple might bring out a new model at any point (iMac upgrade a week after I bought mine), so it's best to buy straight after a refresh.
Last point: there will be an adjustment period, so it takes time to stop trying to do things the Windows way and use Mac tools instead - Command instead of Control and Exposé instead of Windows-Tab being prime examples.

 

In 18 months your MPB will be obsolete....every device you have and every computer you own is always obsolete after 18 months....because it is guaranteed that something bigger (or smaller) and better is going to come along displace what you currently have. Like when apple finally decides to get rid of the Integrated graphics cards....i want a mother ****ing Nvidia Geforce 8800GT on my MBP!!! or something that can run MW1+2 with maxed out settings....

1 thing i do hate though is the when ever i search something i always have to add "for mac" theres just not as much support for apple computers as there is for PCs primarily becuase there are a ton less macs out there than PCs...

And for those who say macs cant get viruses or cant get the number of viruses a PC can your wrong....the only reason their arent many viruses for mac is becuase there are (as i mentioned above) a shit ton more PCs than macs and malicious a-hole hackers have yet to develop viruses for the mac....just wait the day will come when macs can be infected by as many viruses as the PC (hopefully by then Mac OSX will have the security features available that complete stop any virus in its track)

I went out and celebrated with some coworkers tonight, just signed a new client that will provide us with lots of cash money, so i went a tad overboard drinking tonight so my rants may make little sense.

But get the mac, cause you can bootcamp and have both OS's while you cant do it (as easily) as with a PC
but it also depends on what you want it for, if you want a gaming laptop go with an alienware with windows 7...ill be buying one this summer...

 

I grew up on dos and windows - I never used a mac until I got my iMac 2 years ago. Once in a while I use bootcamp windows and it works great, but I love Snow Leopard. The ease of use when it comes to sound and film engineering is unreal.

 

I have a mac and I really do miss my PC, my next computer will definitely be a windows, they are both awesome but if you want to game then get a PC

 

I was also a PC for ~18 years; got a Macbook for the hell of it and it converted me in a week. Unless your main use of it is going to be gaming, get the macbook

 

I've used a MacBook for quite a while, because I hated Windows Vista. Windows 7 is something totally different, it's not as simple as OS X, but it's not doing things you don't want, it's a whole new world compared to Windows Vista.

I'd go for W7. With 4GB RAM you should be able to run quite alot of programs, my laptop has 4GB DDR3 RAM and the highest usage I've ever seen was about 40%.

You don't have to pay alot of money for a MBP too (and if you want to spend a lot of money, you can go for a high end MSI, Asus or Alienware).

E: WTF is that MacBook and PC sh*t about, a PC is a personal computer, the name was invented in the 20th century, when the first computers for normal consumers were built, before that there were only supercomputers as big as a fridge calculating stuff. There's no difference between a Mac and a PC, they are both PC's.

 

You'll make lots of new friends in school if you get a shiny new MBP.
