And how do You carry a laptop, notebook or netbook? In a bag, holding it in Your hand.
That's how iPad should be carried, Apple added even marked bag to thestarting set.

I don't think it makes iPad more portable, though.

The iPad is already affecting iPhone gaming for the worse.... for now. I hope devs turn their attention back quickly because I'm already chomping at the bit to get a Nexus One and the apps/games are the only thing keeping me on my iPhone right now.

Apple has turned their app attention almost completely to the iPad, games like Mirror's Edge were delayed specifically because of the iPad, the median price point is significantly higher and the market penetration is ALWAYS going to be lower than the iPhone, so the sooner they realize that the better.

I got a nice Netbook and my iPhone for less than the Wifi iPad. Don't need a gigantic, oversized iPod Touch that has 90% feature parity with my phone.

Let's not forget that the iPhone and iPod Touch are growing in huge numbers still, so that large userbase is getting larger. They expect the iPhone to grab another huge chunk of the smartphone market this year. If Verizon gets the iPhone this year, growth will be massive for the platform. The iPad, which should get some great sales on its own, will not be getting anywhere near those numbers.

Yes, it does seem like the iPad is already affecting iPhone/iPod touch gaming, or at least this weekend. I won't lie: I'm a lil' salty at the fact that I've been awaiting Mirror's Edge for the iPhone/iPod touch ever since it was first announced late last year and then it gets released EXCLUSIVELY for the iPad and unless I'm just uninformed, I haven't seen or read anything about the game's eventual released for the originally intended (I suppose) platforms.

I guess on the bright side, if things temporarily slow up to give the iPad a little shine and limelight, maybe I'll be able to catch up on the backlog of games for my iPod touch, lol! :D Or hopefully that's a little silver lining there!

    That does look fun

Save your money, that game looks exspensive but I would love to watch others play.

Does anyone know if the ipad refreshes itself while connected to the Internet?
(example) if I am posting on toucharcade and someone responds to me do I have to hit the refresh button to see the response or will it refresh itself like a laptop or pc?

Think of it more like crack. The first taste (iPod Touch) is "free" ($200 or below) but once you're hooked you're going to want to buy a bigger pipe (iPad).
The iPod Touch is the gateway drug to the iPad. One compliments the other.
I also see more iPod/iPhone interactivity with the iPad as is currently shown by the new Scrabble app. Next up is probably Battleship/UNO/some card playing game.

I see my pre-ordered 65GB 3G iPad as more of a portable screen into my Macbook Pro at home (iTeleport), to remotely peer into my VMware vSphere 4 infrastructure at work (vManage & WYSE apps), to RDP into client servers (iTeleport), SSH into the servers in our colo (iSSH), assist remote clients (TeamViewer), and have all my PDF manuals on-hand (GoodReader). If I need to edit a Microsoft Office document then I'll either remote in to the Windows 7 Enterprise VM @ work or use DocumentsToGo/iWork. It will also be nice to stream the videos stored on my home Macbook Pro (AirVideo), or stream my music collection (Simplify or Orb) without having to always sync the device or re-encode video and sync it to the iPhone/iPad. And watching live TV isn't a problem either (Slingplayer or EyeTV - I have both).

I do all of the above right now on my 3GS (minus iWork of course), however having a larger screen to work with is what I'm buying an iPad for.
On its own it's just OK. As a remote terminal or VM infrastrcture controller into many different computers and servers running different operating systems, it's a fracking Godsend, much like the iPhone 3GS is.

The ones whining and complaining about the iPad haven't really thought through their positions on the subject, instead insisting that it's either an overgrown iPod Touch, doesn't have "Flash" so it's worthless, or simply are too poor to afford such a quality device so they slam on it to make their previous purchase of an iPod Touch somehow justified in the eyes of others.
These are the kinds of people those of us with good jobs call "children" and treat them as such.

Funny, but but probably fake since they never show it working and don't show any closeups (or even break the case open at all for that matter). :p

I don't think the iPad will affect iPhone gaming directly. For the most part, I believe iPhones and iPod Touch gaming will remain a little bit more popular than that for the iPad, so games will most-likely be published on the iPhone to see the response, and then produce it onto the iPad with more gameplay/better graphics etc, etc.

Even if it does affect iPhone gaming it will be to an insignificant amount, and as Apple keeps its devices updated and creates new generation iPads/iPods, none of their devices will become out-dated.

So, no, I don't think the iPad will "hurt" iPhone gaming at all, as long as Apple keeps the iPod Touch/iPhone up-to-date, and the chances are they will.

Well said. Pretty much what I have been saying all along. Waiting on my 64 GB 3G as well. The remote ability and the large screen will make this an awesome piece of equipment.

Doesn't really make sense unless you don't want your touch any more. Feature parity, anyone?
I can do everything that you just mentioned on my Netbook... almost entirely for free, with a full keyboard, multi-tasking, etc. I'm not saying the iPad MUST NOT be useful for you, but it's probably not useful, for the price, for most people.
    Netbook.
I have a good job, but I don't have the kind of money required to throw down $500 for a device I essentially already own. So I think you're a little mixed up about who the "child" is in this situation.

I'm sure that there are lots of people who can use iPads and have more money than they know what to do with to get sucked into the Black Hole of Apple. For the rest of us, we just want a continuation of quality games on our iPhones, which are actually useful for us, and not this ridiculous exclusive focus on the iPad. Take the Games off of the iPhone and other mobile OSes are surpassing iPhone OS in user friendliness and usability as we speak.

    Well said!

It's pretty insulting when people, who made the decision to purchase an iPad (which I, and most others have no issue with) have to justify their decision by putting down those who question the value of the device. Their justification is that anyone who doesn't like or want an ipad right now either hasn't given it enough thought, is poor or is a child. That is an insulting.

Like the poster above, many of us do have the financial means to purchase an iPad, but just because we have $500 to spend doesn't mean you need to spend it. I'm perfectly happy with my multimedia setup with 1 desktop, 3 laptaps, 3 game consoles (my PS3 is my media server for every computer in the house, Netflix streaming, Youtube and so on directly to an HDTV) and two iPhones (my wife and I each have one) for our portable/mobile needs. I think the iPad is a neat gadget, but I don't need one. I don't need the multimedia capability, and while the gaming might be better, I have 3 at home gaming consoles for non-portable gaming (realistically the iPad is not a portable gaming device).

So the point is that those who chose to purchase an iPad should be happy with that decision and should not need to insult others as a way of justifying your decision to purchase the device. Calling others "poor" or "children" doesn't make your decision any better if you have doubt in your mind.

Yes we agree. The IPad is a neat gadget.
As for the comment that the IPad is not a portable gaming device....LOL Really. I guess in your mind because it doesn't fit in my pocket it's not portable. With that thought process, I guess a laptop isn't portable either.

If it's not a portable device, then I guess all that 3G is just a waste of time.

    No...

The iPhone/iPod Touch will be fine! I love my shiny new iPad but it will never replace my 3GS for appstore gaming! I don't have my iPad in my pocket at work, I have my 3GS. Nothing beats portability!

Also I wish people would stop moaning about the iPad exclusive games. There's going to be games only for the iPad! And that makes sense because it's a different product. If you want those games buy an iPad. Although with that said, I want Mirrors Edge on my 3GS now! I'm loving the iPad version, so I need it in my pocket!! :D

I agree with this! I picked an iPad up and I'm a mature adult that doesn't need to justify my purchase. I wish more people were like that.

Edit: This is directed @ Txag2005's comment.

    Txag,

I agree with you. On the other hand, it would be nice if the people who decided not to get an iPad (cf Sir Brizz) had the same courtesy to those who decided to get one.

I think among my tongue-in-cheek reply, you must have missed these two comments:
If you want an iPad, fine. My complaints in this thread aren't about people buying iPads. If you're taking that away from my posts, you are missing my points entirely. I find it a useless device for me. I want focus back on iPhone and I believe that development for iPad Apps/Games is going to slow dramatically once developers realize that the market penetration is nowhere close to that of the iPhone series.

Still, for right now, the iPad is hurting iPhone gaming. I, along with others in this thread, am hoping that reverses quickly.

Sorry, my mistake. I just saw the snarky comment and was responding to that. That will teach me not to respond so quickly.

How could this not be true? There is a huge pent-up demand for iPad games right now, but - all things being equal - it will be hard for developers to make as much money selling to an audience of 300,000 iPad users as they could to 75,000,000 Touch/Iphone users.

I am not sure it is that much. I would imagine that most of the work that is going into iPad only games will be trickled down to the iPhone eventually. for example, GeoDefense 2 is only going as an iPad game for now, but I am sure there will be an iPhone port eventually. I haven't noticed any iPad only games that couldn't be iPhone games. just some that aren't.

    It's okay. No harm done.
    My feeling, as well.
I think you are right long term. I'm talking about short term. Personally, I think far too much emphasis is being put on the iPad right now, where the market share is not now and probably never really will be there. Maybe the iPad just needs a "killer app", but for the size it is, it has a lot of competition already in the gaming space. Plus, if I want to play a boardgame... I'd just get the board out. :)
