The only way the iPad replaces the iPod Touch is if you don't want an iPhone (different cell phone carrier etc..) and that device is your only portable internet source (no laptop etc..). If you are doing all of your portable web browsing and email on an iPod touch using wifi, then without a doubt I can see the iPad replacing it. Otherwise, most people have an iPod touch for music, apps and games on the go and the iPad isn't going to offer that same portability. It's not an issue of money, it's an issue of what amount of portability do you want because while it's cheaper, an iPod touch is by no means cheap.
I hope the release of Geometry Wars doesn't signal the start of a trend. If it does, then YES, the iPad has definitely hurt iPhone gaming, and will continue to do so.
I agree. A lot of the naysayers are people who cannot afford to buy an iPad, and are afraid that their flow of 99-cent iPod Touch games will be cut off. I also have an iPod Touch which I bought when it was first released, and I love it. Some will disagree, but for me the iPad is the perfect replacement for an iPod Touch. It will never replace anyone's iPhone, and because of that, I think that there will still be a market for mobile games, which should be reassuring to the people who choose not to buy an iPad. It's pretty clear that most of the negativity is coming from those who can't afford to buy an iPad ( though I'm sure they will deny it! ) I think that once people get a look at the iPad it will become clear just how superior it is to the old iPod Touch.
Wont hurt Developers wont quit making games if people are buying them. It will ultimately be the users that make the decision
I fear that Apple will gimp the Iphone and Ipod so they don't look better than the Ipad. If that is the case then they'll lose the mobile market to other makes which are pushing forwards. Apple seem stuck in the past with the Iphone now compared to what the others are doing. I also fear that no flash support and no camera flash will also not be a feature in the future, which are important to me and my friends, so we'll move over to HTC or someone else. I believe we'll see an impact on Iphone and Ipod games at first. However I don't believe the Ipad will sell enough to make it worthwhile to do exclusives. So we'll see a shift back over the the Ipod and Iphone. The problem is, how long will this take? Will the Ipod and Iphone ever get ports of these Ipad games? Software is the only reason I still own an Iphone, because I love the Apps people make for it. If that software goes to the Ipad, then I have no reason to own an Iphone when hardware wise, there is much better out there. Especially with Windows 7 Mobile and that new Nvidia dual core mobile chip coming out.
Any hesitation about the iPad isn't about money. If you game on any iDevice, you either dropped $200-300+ on an iPod touch, or $200+ in addition to a $100+ monthly phone bill for an iPhone. If you didn't then your parents did. Either way, money isn't the issue. It is about the fact that the device is too big to be portable and isn't a replacement for a laptop since it runs a mobile OS and has just touch controls. I think a big reason why iPhone/iPod Touch gaming has been big is because despite the fact that 99% of the games on the App store are garbage, they are portable. Those two facts make up for the fact that we are playing games that are far below the quality of solid PSP or DS games. The iPad really throws that out the window. It's not portable and it has the same control issues that the iPhone has. Sure the screen is bigger so fingers blocking aren't an issue, but touch controls still are are problem and will never replace real controls on a portable gaming device (or mouse/keyboard). Regarding game prices, unless Apple starts to force developers to keep minimum prices, demand from consumers will drive iPad prices down as they did on the iPhone side. Finally, as many agree, most people are not getting an iPad for gaming. There are much smarter gaming purchases for $500 than an iPad. Therefore, unless there is massive demand for iPad games and they sell really well, big developers are not going to deliver anything more than mobile quality games. The market for gaming isn't big enough as it's not a gaming device and they are better off focusing on the DS, PSP, PC and home consoles.
True there is alot of games on ipod touch that are crap. But there is now alot of games that are of higher quality than a psp and DS and alot more quality games are coming soon. These games are much much more poratble than ipad. NOVA,sandstorm, mirrors edge, splinter cell, zombe infection, need for speed, choas rings, finaly fantasy (the upcoming one), and many more. itouch and iphone gameing will proably be much more succesful than ipad gaming
Anyone notice how many awesome games are already set to go tomorrow for the launch of the IPad? OH and btw, they won't play on IPod. At least not in all their HD glory. For the gaming experience that we had wished IPod could be.......Buy an IPad! Hey, just a reminder to all the naysayers....when the IPad crushes the sales numbers that people are expecting and becomes the next must have device for folks....you can remember Mr Obvious told you so...
Apple wont stop putting out ipods for a very long time. The 'iPod' is their most successful product ever, possibly even the most successful brand name ever. Also, the iPad will never replace the iPhone (because it is too bulky, can't be used as a phone etc.), and so as long as the iPhone is still around, the iPod Touch will always feed off it, because they run the same OS and the same apps. The Ipod touch ain't going nowhere!
I beg to differ. It's good to have a forum to be able to express your opinions. But you know what they say about opinions. LOL This is how I see it..... NOW : IPhone (rules. Best phone available), IPod Touch(rules. Great little portable gaming device that does just so much more. And fairly inexpensive) Tomorrow: IPhone (rules. See why above), IPod Touch(still rules..for now. Will find apps Will be available because of the IPhone. Developers will focus on IPad right now though to take advantage of the little to no competition to show off their stuff) IPad (Will shake up the market and will make it the device to have in a short period of time. Will have the lions share of apps and games written for it for awhile because of reason stated above. No competition to have game noted.) Future: IPhone (still rules. Especially when they build the version that works for CDMA networks) IPod Touch (will still be enjoyed by the kiddies and those folks who do not have an IPhone and/or who do not have the dough for the IPad. IPad (Better versions come out with more options that are being voiced by the consumer...dare I say..Flash support?) Changes the way people use computers. Copycat devices come to the stage but with an ever increasing apps library already here...IPad wins. Agree...disagree...I don't really care. It is what it is and it will be what it will be. But don't cry...Ipod will still be around for a while. And you will still have 99 cent games to play. It just won't get the attention from developers like the IPad will.
Yes it's already doing so, Giving games that are on the the iPhone more features on the ipad version Example: Real racing skins or that Need For Speed Shift has 8 more cars. Crap I Need those cars so bad.I would even pay for them in in-app purchases
The thing that annoys me most here is that geometry wars doesn't even or really benefit from a larger screen or any of the features of the ipad.
The only thing I think the iPad will do is take away from the iPod Touch/iPhone temporarily. Right now, it's a new system and everyone's trying to take advantage of that. In the long run, though, I think devs will realize that people would rather carry around an iPod Touch/iPhone in thier pocket than an iPad that is a bit too bulky to carry everywhere. The only reason I'm mad is that Sam and Max is on the iPad but not the iPhone (yet). I'm just hoping that it goes to the iPhone soon, after all the iPad hype has died down. Then again, I'm not getting an iPad, so this is mostly wishful thinking.
I don't think the Ipad will replace the Ipod Touch. I mean the Ipod Touch is essentially a portable music player and it functions fantastically for its purpose and more. I don't think anyone will actually carry an Ipad for an portable mp3 player (imagine running down the street with a Ipad strapped around your stomach as opposed to a simple Itouch laced around your arm)
And how you see it is looking at device capability, and NOT the consumer market itself. The latter is what I'm doing. It doesn't matter how much more power and screen real estate iPad has, and how much gaming would be great on it if the consumer base skews older and doesn't hit that "core" gamer wheelhouse and therefore doesn't sell as many games as other platforms like iPhone/touch proper. This isn't about 99 cent apps for me as far as comparisons of iPad and iPhone/touch and whether or not iPad is the "future" of Apple device gaming. I've gone on record thinking the race to the bottom on iPhone/touch was just plain silliness on the parts of developers, and still think $9.99 intro with gradual incremental decreases in price over time is the best bet for developers who hope to make the most money and have a longer chance at sustained revenue generation. No, this is about how I see the iPad market shaking out. You may want to swat away the intro price of the iPad as a product, but it's important as the consumer group most likely to buy a lot of games ("core" gamers) may balk at paying such a price (as they have done historically, btw). This is why iPod touch is of such vital importance to Apple's strategy and to the App Store and to the game market on the App Store in particular: its consumer base is filled with consumers in that "core" gamer group. Add to that the cachet of extreme mobility available on iPhone/touch, which isn't really there with iPad, and you have a situation where iPad will more likely appeal to older consumers. I just don't see iPad hitting that consumer group. I see it appealing more to older consumers for whom games are not a primary or even peripheral desire. These older consumers won't be in the market to buy many games, and as such developers will decrease "exclusive" or primary support for iPad as that shakes out. It's not about the device, it's about the consumer make up. I just don't see iPad being a big platform for games as I saw with iPhone/touch once Apple opened up that SDK.
Time will tell...but I am an older gamer and the IPod to me was "too small" to really enjoy it the way I wanted to. The IPad is a bit more to my liking. And to say it is "too big" and "too expensive" to hit the core gamer....LOL Who do you think drove the whole PC market? Do you think we have quad core processors and 1 gig memory video cards to do email and write term papers? LOL Gamers spend money. Lots of money. And this device is right up their alley. I repeat myself when I say...the kiddies will have the IPod for a while yet. Those who use the IPod Touch for a "music device" have cheaper options. Just get a regular Ipod type mp3 player for music to take a walk or work out at the gym with. Take the IPad with you when you want serious entertainment at your fingertips. Been looking at all the cool games coming out for this thing. Going to spend a few hundred on apps in the first week.
there are already a couple of iPad specific games (namely Small Worlds) that arent coming to iPhone...so because i dont want the iPad i dont get a cool game ?
