As part of online discussions about freemium, I've heard, more than once, folks saying what if Super Mario Bros. were free-to-play/freemium? Would you like your childhood memory tarnished by that? How is this even an apples to apples comparison? Nevermind that there was almost no market for cell phone games... SMB for NES cost $55 when it was first released in 1985. Accounting for inflation, that's about $140 of today's money. Are folks really ignoring that the "freemium concern" would've been moot since video game makers were getting a whole lot more money per title then than now? Never mind that the market was far less saturated back then (in fact, it was much closer to collapse, and Nintendo did their part in revitalizing the industry).
