Found an interesting short article about the iTouch performance downall from firmware 2.2.1 to 3.0 and thought I'd share and get tour opinions as to whether you think to performance hit is worth the new features based on this articles experiences.

iPod 2G users don't really suffer much (if at all). It's the first gen users who will suffer. I tried it out, and it sucks. Sometimes it works well on iPod 1G, yet other times it's a fail.

Why should I subsidize iPhone owners?

Most of the 3.0 upgrades are more useful to iPhone owners than Touch owners, so why should we have to pay for it while they get it for free?

Because iPhone owners pay (high) monthly bills that Apple gets part off and makes their money off of us after the initial purchase of the device.

However, iTouch owners only have to pay for the device and apple stops collecting money from them. So to even it out, they charge $10 for touch users to collect some money after the initial purchase of the device.

I always thought that that was reasonable. How much to iPhone users have to pay each month?

How in the heck is that "reasonable"? It's an Mp3 player, there's no reason for them to continue to collect money from us after our initial purchase (which they do anyway, through the app store).

So far I've found that my iPod does run faster, and it's a 1G.
However, my battery absolutely gets killed when I play videos now. Before I could play like 3 1.5 hour movies without having to recharge. Now it's 1 movie.
But that could be based on my actual battery life since I got my iPod when it was first released.

I can second GaiaIllusion here. My 1G touch appears faster, and the music library functions and search are the killer app for me.

I don't know about the battery issues, since I pretty much always run tethered to a power source (either AC charger or an external battery) ... yeah, I know, it's supposed to be a portable device...

The expense of $10 versus buying another $300 device, or getting a contract are a no brainer in my situation (I use a pre-paid phone, barely use it so only spend ~$5 a month..)

Back OT. Even on a 1G touch, my experience with 3.0 has been very good.

My iPod Touch 1st generation boots faster now. But the only thing that is slow sometimes is loading apps and Spotlight was fast at first but it's very slow now. I dont think it was a waste of $10.00 imo.

Its the same as buying updated software for anything. You want the new version, it costs money. Just like upgrading your OS or MS Office. It is still a fully functioning MP3 player w/out the update... you just don't have the new features of the new OS. Every year I shell out more money for new versions of iLife because I want those new features... if upgrades were free, how would a company continue to develop new features. It costs money to program these things.

I have no problem with it.

I guess. I was thinking of it in terms of iPhone users paying a monthly fee for the services they chose to sign up for, and then Apple gives them an update for free but charges us. I suppose instead if you think of it in terms of iPhone users paying a small part of their monthly fees for continued OS updates, and Touch owners aren't doing that, I guess that's reasonable.

I've spent about $135 on games for my Touch so Apple has received about $40 of that. I'd like to think I've paid for an update.

It's not just a music player anymore, playing music is just one of its many many functions. Heck I hardly listen to songs with it these days.

I hardly listen to music on my iPod Touch but nothing in the update makes me want to actually upgrade. So I've not.

I have a 1G ipod touch. I updated and I I like 3.0. Copy and paste was just enough for me to upgrade. Spotlight, and landscape email are also nice features. My 1G is getting old and oudated. I'll buy the ipod touch 3G as soon as it is out.

Depends on the plan. I have to pay almost $40 a month. I think I deserve a free update. However, I think it is a rip-off to Touch owners to have to pay for a firmware upgrade. I won't be updating my 2G Touch (especially after seeing how slow my iPhone 3G is now that I have updated).

My Jailbroken 3.0 3g is 3 times faster in
    charging
    load times
    boot time
battery still kinda of the same

I pay $135 a month for what is considered unlimited data, messaging and talk time.

I think the ten dollars is a reasonable price for itouch upgrades, because they are only for major firmware changes.

I do see why one would have trouble deciding if the $10 bucks was worth it for forward not really specified for itouch. That's why I'd wait untill 3.1 to see if any thing else comes to light and all the games and apps are compatible, then it might be worth the money.

Actually, I noticed that charging seemed faster too. I thought I was just imagining it though. Anyway, everything else is a lot slower for me now.
