I personally think folders were a very good idea, but about the most horrible execution I have seen from apple. Why? -only 12 apps per folder, and no scrolling within folders. So If I have >12 games, I'm pretty much screwed -No folders within folders, so I can't organize my games folders with types of games -It's insanely glitchy messing with it on iTunes, folders change into apps ( I had 2 doodlejumps once, didn't sync though) Feel free to counterpoint - add on to this.
Making them is a pain. It takes forever, even in iTunes, to drag one folder over 5 pages just to bring it to a folder. And yeah, 12 is waaay to little.
I've lost a few apps due to my very clever organization skills. Wish the finder would tell me which folder.
Folders within folders? Isn't the point of folders to organize it in the first place? Sorry if i'm wrong, I haven't upgraded yet due to laziness...
Not quite sure your point, but my point is I would like to have -Games -----Dual Stick Shooters -----RPG's -----Arcade ---------Best of arcade -----etc. etc.
Organize your main pages in to game types. How is 2160 apps not enough? Are you that much of an addict. If I have more than 12 apps in a genre, I make the genre more specific or make a second folder for the genre.
Having two folders for 1 genre doesn't seem very efficient or organized.. Trolling aside, I only have about 100 apps, but I wish folders worked like they do on the desktop: being able to organize your stuff how YOU want to. (not steve jobs) Look at my example above.
So you want 1 folder to put many other folders in? That seems counter productive... Also, folders on a desktop are folders on a desktop, not a phone.
I see it being completely productive because all of your apps are on one page, and it is very intuitive (you made it to your liking). The only downside is it takes ~1-2 seconds to wait for animations to show your folder. You could spend much longer flipping through your pages or typing it in on spotlight. To each his own.
I think you're complaining way too much. Hey, it's better than nothing. If you don't want to use it, don't. If you have more than 12 apps of a kind, make a new folder. So if you have 20 Driving Apps, make a folder Driving Apps 1 and a folder Driving Apps 2. Folders helped me a ton-I got from 10 pages down to one page, and I can find everything very easily.
Yes... but you have one folder on your phone... and put all your apps in it and make new folders? Why not just make the folders on your home screen in the first place? I'm confused.
Look at your hard drive on your computer, notice how it is all neatly in folders. I would like my phone like that, but on a much smaller scale.
Of course. There's always room for improvement-I'm sure they will be minor OS tweaks that will gradually decrease the limitations set on folders. Apple is excellent at addressing customer issues. I agree that it could get better, but I am happy Apple implemented it in the first place. And it will only get better from here
To say that folders are horrible is to condemn them altogether. That's ridiculous. I'm fine with the way it is. I wouldn't mind folders within folders, but then looking at my own system, with many folders nested 4, 5, 8 deep, perhaps it's for the best as I'd end up having trouble bloody finding anything. Plus, it's just more tapping. At least this way I'm no more than two taps away from an app. Sure, I could use Spotlight, but I'd rather not. The 12 app limit is a bit limiting, I'll grant that, but how would you have handled them? Opened up a whole new scrolling home screen with a back button? Kind of ugly and could end up confusing newbies, letting them get lost in their self-made warren of folders and then complaining about it. It may not be ideal, but it's a hell of a lot better than not having folders at all. Now I'm only worried about storage space, not Springboard space, which was a source of constant frustration for me. Not to mention stuff is a hell of a lot easier to find now, and with a lot less page flipping. Not to be an apologist here, but Apple's trying to cater to the lowest common denominator of middle-class tech-nots who still haven't worked out the remote on their Blu-Ray players yet still want to be trendy with the latest and greatest gadgets. We here are the power users -- the outliers who want more, better, faster, deeper. What we, the clear minority, want out of the iPhone would probably just end up confusing or annoying the trendster Luddites that are the bigger part of the iPhone market.
If Apple were to make folders work like they do on the desktop i would take my iPhone and chuck into the river. I do not want my phone to work like a desktop, digging from folder to folder to find anything. Eventually you would have to create a parallel list system and that would kill the iPhone as a consumer product. The beauty of the iOS is that it's designed for flat organizational systems: it's very easy to have everything you use regularly at your fingertips. Also, remember that the iOS has a very powerful search function; I find that it's often the quickest way to get to a specific app. Anyone who needs subcategories in their folders should just jailbreak or get an android phone
