Why does Apple always give vague release dates?

I'm home sick today, and don't have much to do. For fun, and to satisfy my own curiosity, I decided to call up a few Best Buy and Apple stores to see when or if they had any 4th generation iPod touches in stock. Of course, no one could give me a simple, straight answer...

Best Buy 1 - "They might be in tonight, or Friday night."
Best Buy 2 - "Sometime next week..."
Best Buy 3 - "Try calling back tomorrow."
Apple Store 1 - "Apple doesn't tell us. Try calling back tomorrow."
Apple Store 2 - "We're not sure, but sometime before the end of the week, or the beginning of next week."

Even the release date for iOS4.1 is shrouded in mystery.

    Why?

Exactly. Just in case something flops and the release date doesn't go through, no one will b!tch.

So threads like this get posted. It's their strategy. It works. You are more likely to bring up Apple in real life conversations, also. Marketing at it's best. Liability is not their concern, I can assure you. It's never their fault. ;)

My Apple store flat out told me they will be in the stores tomorrow (Wednesday the 8th).

Add: That is also why their promotion of buy a MacBook for school or college and get a free (8gb) iPod Touch is ending today the 7th I would gather.

4.1 was already confirmed as Sept. 8th.

Preorders for the new lineup of iPods were last week, my nano should be arriving between the 10th-15th so I would take that as an estimate to when stores will have them in stock. Also don't believe Best Buy employees about items that aren't released yet. They usually have shipments in the back ready for shelves prior to release, and said items are stickered for approximate shelve dates. Gizmodo and Engadget have photographed many items at Best Buy that were shelved accidently, and then a day later removed.

You're probably right, but still... The vagueness is a little bothersome.

I know someone who wants to buy my 2nd gen iPod touch tomorrow, but I don't know if I should sell it because I don't know if I'll be able to pick up the 4th gen on the same day. I not only use my iPod for games, but I also use it for work, and for organizing tasks. I guess I'll just have to go back to using pencil and paper like some savage until the new iPods are officially in stores.

But the American site still says "Coming Soon." Lol.

Hahaha. I wish I knew someone who worked at Best Buy.

Apple probably has a whole team assigned to "giving vague release dates".

Is the iPod getting released into stores tommorow? So, it comes out in stores before the people who preorder it?

Wouldnt matter. They've had new iPods available before Back to School was over in the past. They just made it very clear that new iPods were not eligible for back to school discounts.

I would love it if that were true everywhere.

    Hahaha. It wouldn't surprise me.

I don't know. I haven't been able to get a straight answer from anyone.

I called Best Buy twice today and got two completely different answers.

The first: I'm not sure...the inventory says it was supposed to be here 9/5, but today is 9/7 and we still did not receive them.

The second: Oh, we are actually sold out of those. You should try call back maybe 2 weeks later.

So which am I supposed to believe? I am 90% sure that Apple is going to have them available starting tomorrow though. So I am guessing that Best Buy is trying to deceive us and is actually going to start selling them tomorrow like Apple.

You were deceived by teenage employees who could care less.

I don't get why anyone would pre-order if they could just get it at a store sooner. This is the first time I've wanted to buy one right at release, so I've never paid attention to how it works. But, from reading any threads I see on the iPod 4, it sure seems like people who don't pre-order will get them first.

Lol or adults who could care less. Either way they were probably 5 minutes away from their 15 minute break and were texting while taking your call.

    Hahaha. :D

A few hours ago I called the Apple store again just for the heak of it...

"They'll be in stock tomorrow morning at 10am."

    I guess that settles it.

Now I just hope I don't have to fight anyone to get one.

Will they be in all stores at the same time, or will there be some lag time between them?

They probably got them today, in the afternoon. Chances are, they'll be in most stores tomorrow morning.
