It's all relative. Sure, $3 isn't much compared to the cost of dinner at Ruby Tuesday, but in the AppStore, it can get you three great games. Just depends on how you decide to view those 3 smackers.
I kind of just feel sorry for people who are still hung up over the $3 price point of Canabalt. It's one of the few games I've been consistently playing for the past five months, and the amount of playtime I've gotten out of it surpasses most $60 XBOX games.
Very true, I believe that if people would just see past the initial price point, they don't know how many hours of fun they're missing out on. This isn't a game that you play and forget about, but something that you can keep on coming back to, which makes it so great. Hey look, I just found $3 under the sofa.
I recall you being very defensive when I said I didn't like Suikoden II. That said, it is an excellent point, nothing is universally appreciated. There's always a handful of people who just genuinely don't like something. However, negative App Store reviews of good games (at least, the ones that the majority thinks are good) tend to be inane and incredibly stupid. 1 star reviews for GTA because the person didn't read the system requirements comes to mind as a good example. I generally disregard these sorts of opinions, etc for a good laugh. My particular favorite is when someone gives something a bad review even when they like the game, simply to try to bring it down to the level they think it should be. Like giving a game 1 star because you think it's a 3 star game, and are trying to counterbalance 1 of those 5 star ratings. It's pretty ridiculous, but entertaining. If the game is good, these people usually get drowned out by the waves of praise.
Canabalt is a fun timewaster for 2 hours at most then its magic is gone. Enviro-bear 2010 I want to love but I cant because I cant control the car at all.
It all boils down to personal taste... I believe Enviro-Bear 2010 is a blast to play because it's so insanely awful. If you're the quirky type who likes quirky entertainment, you'd probably love Enviro-Bear. But if you don't see any humor in intentionally crappy graphics, or awkward gameplay, you'd probably hate it. If you have a stressful life, or like puzzle games that you can unwind to, Zen Bound is a good buy. I work about 10 hours a day during the week, and Zen Bound chills me out when I feel like eating my computer. But if you prefer action and / or combat, Zen Bound would probably bore you. If you grew up with classic arcade games like Spaced Invaders, you'd probably love Canabalt's survival gameplay, and simplistic retro style. Personally, I've never been much of a gamer. I've only owned about 4 systems, and I rarely went to the arcades. When I play Canabalt, my mind doesn't fill with nostalgia. I just see a cheap game that costs too much (by AppStore standards). None of these games are bad. It just depends on what you're into.
I don't really know enough about the other games to pass judgement (because, you know, I don't have them nor have I played them), but the only reason that I haven't bought Canabalt is that it's free to play on Newgrounds. I played it a lot when it was just a flash game, and I never saw the need to purchase something I can play for free.
I found most of the 1 star review being "rage stars" of people that just didn't read the description. The most representative is that 1000+ idiotic 1-star reviews about "Cell Phone Tracker". The app clearly states in its description that it is a fake, created as a joke for a friend by making him believe his cellphone is being tracked by GPS (but is in fact a precalculated animation, tracking your number, as you're supposed to be beside him). And thousands of people put 1-star reviews, nearly all telling that "it doesn't work, it's not my friend's position, refund !". It is even more than thousands, as even the net reviews (forums, app sites, etc) are acting this way. (Yeah, I was so much shocked by the appstore comments that I wanted to know more) Mass idiocy really scares me.
i have canabalt (promo code), but i rarely play it since it gets eye-straining due to the increasing speed, which eventually becomes frantic tapping on a fast scrolling screen.
1. I don't want my ass flamed, so I'll keep quiet. 2. It's quite boring after awhile? Some people hate puzzle games. 3. You run. You fall down. I hate pick up and play games. 4. It's hard as eff, kinda like jet car stunts.
In the same vein as that, I downloaded the xbox360 "emulator" for my itouch (it's a prank program that goes into the red ring of death). ..People had actually downloaded the program, completely ignoring the description, expecting it to be a true, working xbox360 emu. I saw all their 1-star-ratings and just cried to myself.
