I don't really think the ability to use a device for the duration of a transpacific flight is a concern for most people.
Why buy an iPod Touch when you can get a Zune? Why order from Burger King when you can get McDonalds? Why watch Twilight when you can watch The Hurt Locker?
Cus it's beyond cool. Everyone thinks you're so badass playing doodle jump on a device 3 times as big as an ipod touch
Because an ipod touch has the appstore, Burger king has more meat on their dollar burger, and twilight is a better movie.....jk on the last one.
Hehe! Quick! Run to the window and shout, "I'M MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!" Seriously, people. Buy what you want. Don't buy what you don't want. Vote with your wallets, and the corporations might just listen...
And I disagree. It will be quite a great deal more niche than the iPhone/touch platform. Eh? There's two things you haven't factored, and they are VERY important when discussing possible iPod touch migration to iPad: 1. Differences in portability. The iPod touch, like the iPhone (with which it exists in the same platform: iPhone/touch) is FAR more portable than iPad. Part of the reason many people buy an iPod touch is that portability. 2. Price point. This is an incredibly important factor, and one you should not have overlooked. At a $199 introductory price for the 8GB model, the iPod touch falls right into the wheelhouse of younger consumers (teens to early twenties). Remember that those in their teens to 20s are, in fact, the bulk of the "core" gamer market (those who buy the most games), and this can be seen by the fact that any jump in iPod touch sales comes hand in hand with jumps in game app sales. At over $400, the iPad doesn't hit into that market. IMHO, the market for iPad will be OLDER than that for iPod touch (and even iPhone), so GAMES will NOT be a primary selling point for the device; rather, it will be e-books and movies that sell more.
I didn't say having a choice was a bad thing, don't twist my words. I bought an iPod Touch instead of a Zune because it had the features that I was looking for, not because it had one feature I wanted, and a whole load of crap I didn't need but some Apple fanboy convinced me I couldn't live without. I don't. I didn't.
I think a more truthful simile would be; " Saying the iPad just a big iPod Touch is like saying your 17" MBP is just a big netbook".
Except...there's a larger (MUCH larger) gap between what that 17" MBP can do compared to the netbook and what iPad can do vs. iPod touch. Someone pointed out that the biggest difference between iPod touch and iPad isn't what they do, but who will use it. Who will use it will, IMHO, present something of a change in how it is used vs. iPod touch. Again, I can see more e-books and movies (and TV shows) and some productivity apps being used on iPad than typical for iPod touch, whereas it will be games and entertainment apps that get more use with the latter, but that's not a matter of device differences as it is a differences in makeup of the consumer market for each device.
I ordered an Alienware m11x with an SU7300 processor, 4GB of RAM and 320GB HDD for just 800 Euro's (it was some sort of special offer, normally it would cost about 950 Euro's with these specs). This is a high performance 11,6" laptop, it runs almost every game on max or decent settings (Crysis on normal to high with about 25fps). Its as portable as an iPad (if not more portable, the iPad is more fragile), and delivers MUCH more performance, for just 300 Euro's more. As a gamer I would never buy an iPad. E: I'll share some more of my arguments against the iPad. Please note, this is from a gaming student perspective. The iPad is way overpriced. Ok, all Apple products are slightly* overpriced but this thing is really overpriced, period. It is a fancy machine, it does look cool, but if you analyze it from my perspective, it becomes so clear that this thing doesn't give any bang for the bucks at all. Maybe people can use it for quickly** surfing the net, sharing photo's with family and friends, and checking e-mails, but this is not a laptop. This is a device to do the things I mentioned, and do them at home. I think it would be horrible to take this thing with you, it's so vulnerable. Students, gamers, and people who travel much will not be charmed by this thing, I'm sure most people will agree with that. If you wan't something to game quickly, this thing isn't the device to do that, even though it will have ton's of quick and casual games. Well that's everything I wanted to say. *I think almost all Apple products are slightly overpriced. **It's true that most Apple are very fast and user friendly, especially the iPod, iPhone and Macbook Pro, but all Apple PC's and laptops are more expensive than other laptops and PC's with the same or better hardware. Compare the Mac Pro to an Acer Predator for example, you'll see HUGE differences in price and performance!
Let me get this straight.... you're comparing an 800 euro gadget (which is a sale price no less) to a 500USD gadget? You do realise those aren't the same currency right? I could buy 2 ipads for that much Edit: although I agree, as a gamer I wouldn't buy an ipad over a dedicated gaming laptop if I had the money for it. Because one is built for games and one is built as a media device
iPad is not a need. iPad is browsing IMDB while watching TV downstairs and not having to pause the TV and go to a different part of the house iPad is having your book collection where ever you want to bring it iPad is great gaming while in the car without killing your laptop's battery iPad is watching your friend's youtube video while in a recliner iPad is keeping your family calendar on your bedside table. iPad is convenience.
With an iPad I can save my iPhone's battery, lay on the couch and surf safari with ease. I can have it next to my desk while I'm at work and watch a movie or read a book. I can take it to starbucks and get asked why didn't you buy a macbook pro? Than I can grab my bag below and pull out my laptop and go haha I have both Went to the apple store today to see if they had a display, they said Uncle Steve didn't want a display like the 1st gen iPhone. So not going to be able to play with one until mine ships.
To counter your post... The laptop can watch high quality DVD's The laptop can have a lasting battery life The laptop can play multiple games The laptop can stream videos other than Youtube and play Flash games The laptop can multi-task The laptop has a real keyboard The laptop has louder speakers The laptop has a bigger screen The laptop can load up Java The laptop can have 500mb-2gb of ram (money wise) and have a better processor, which means it's faster
