And then Cyberdyne will be established, Skynet will become self-aware, and Judgement Day will arrive!
Then once John Connor defeats the machines he will create AI, a war will ensue, and the Matrix will be created!
The ipad will be cool but a no buy for me. It's half way between a laptop and an iPod touuch, but a replacement for neither. It doesn't had half of the features of a laptop meaning the way it is it will never take over that niche, and it isn't nearly as portable as an iPod touch, meaning it won't replace that either, I just can't ever see myself using an ipad in the way I use my touch, like it can't sit in my pocket while I listen to music on a bus. And the fact that it is more expensive means that I don't think I'll pick one up.
I think, that this will be just like the 1st generation Ipod, thats right back in 00's. Everybody wanted new features on there Newton, and this iPod came out, and 'it sucked' by a lot of opinions. But not, we have touch screen ipods. The first ipad will essentially be a giant ipod touch. But essentially the first generation iphone was an ipod with a touchscreen + phone. So, this will be the 'device to own' in a couple of years. I mean, its gonna have Office and photoshop, HELLO!??! Oh yes the gaming aspect of it, well obviously were all idevice gamers here. And i hear lots of complaints on the facct that games will be 'different'. Well, that will evolve too. My parents want a Barnes & Noble ebook reader, im saying hell no. The ipad can do that and more. It can get email, but one thing the iPad cant do, is have a replaceable battery.
For me it's going to be an incredible creativity tool. I'm going to prop it up on the piano bookstand and access my sheet music library from there, tapping the screen when it's time to flip the page (it may even have auto-scrolling, no need to take your hands off the piano). Then I'm going to bring it to the countryside, open up a Paint app, and sketch landscapes using only a finger. No need for paper and art materials, or a laptop with a Wacom tablet. And of course I'll watch videos and play games on a larger screen than my iPod Touch, and without the extra heat, space, and weight of a laptop. Can a laptop fit into my purse? I don't think so.
I think we'll think of more use cases for the iPad's when more apps are made specifically for it. A lot of people, including myself, thinks of an iPad's as just an iPod Touch with a big screen. And while that's true, we have yet to see what kinds of apps devs can actually make with such a huge screen real estate. I'm imagining beatiful looking diary apps where the pages turn, maybe an app for name cards that actually show each name cards as life size thumbnails, etc. I dunno. Right now, Safari and iWork are enough reasons for me to get an iPad. But I'm sure more fantastic apps will come and we'll get to see how else we can use this device. It's really quite hard to imagine right now without all the apps.
If all they want is an ebook reader, why are you trying to convince them to pay more money for a device where the ebooks cost more money? They decided they'd like to read books with a little more ease, now you're spending all their cash just because it's got an email app they didn't even think they needed.
eBook readers are unitaskers with extremely annoying limitations. My kindle is cool and all, but eInk displays are massively overrated. Also, the kindle doesn't have Flash.
...yeah, and they were after a unitasker. Now their child's prompting them to double their investment just for the sake of being able to access email from somewhere other than the phones/laptops/PCs they most likely already own. Being able to do multiple things on the iPad is all well and good, but only for the people who need it. There's no point in trying to convince yourself these extras are all worth it when all you wanted was to look at a bit of text.
What if the extras are worth it and they just didn't know about them? I don't really see the point in raging out about this.
Not really raging, just common sense. Why buy a fingerprint scanner for your bedroom door when all you needed was a bolt? Advertisements and salespeople are constantly trying to convince people they need stuff they don't, just to make an extra few bucks. Besides, the Kindle's battery life puts the iPad's to shame. All these extras are just creating more work for them, they might as well forget the whole idea and go back to paper books.
IMO, anyone that says the iPad is an oversized iPod Touch, you guys arent seeing its true potential. It has iWork (well, Pages and one more program. Forgot the other one though) and every stock app now has a use. Sure you can't play some games with precision, but i personally can't wait to get the most out of it. If textbooks are supported, i could easily replace all my class textbooks with an iPad; lighter, fits in a backpack, and it'd cheaper in the long run. I also can't wait to play Monopoly and Clue on it, since it would be nice not having worry about the game board and game pieces being lost. And lets not forget the devs who can make these apps! I cannot wait to see what the devs will make. Maybe that Unreal Engine 3 will finally work and run smoothly...that'd be great! Even games that might have failed on the iPhone could get a second try on the iPad. I think it would have been better if Apple had the iPad first, then brought the iPod Touch...iPad Mini, anyone? Since i already own an iPod Touch, and a laptop, so the iPad might not be of use to me.
I talked my parents in to getting iPhones when all they wanted was a new pair of Motorola Razr's. It only took them a week to get hooked. Should they have used common sense and just bought cheap cell phones instead? Also, the Kindle's battery life isn't anywhere near the quoted figures unless you spend all your time micromanaging the cellular radio and never load new content.
Ding ding ding, we have a winner! There's a reason why my GBA (not SP) goes with me when I fly: no other gaming device I own* can last the trip. (We're talking Asia/Australia/US all day in the air type of trips here, folks.) *Not technically true: I could pack my Sega Nomad and a ton of AA's, or my NGPC, or my GameBoy Color instead... I think I've still got a working Handspring Visor around somewhere as well.
