True you can play apps on a bigger screen most of them being better, but as of right now I personally think for what it is it's really just too expensive.
Where are you getting $1000 from? It's only half of that amount. The most expensive one is $830 with the biggest capacity, and 3G enabled.
I personally think that the ipad would be bad for the ipod touch and iphone stuff. Because devs will start focusing on the ipad, not the ipod touch.
$399 for iPod $499 for iPad $830 for iPad $999 for MacBook I don't see any "huge" price increases. They have placed all devices evenly spaced.
Well, the iPad is more portable. Honestly, if it works with Wordpress (so I can write for Touchaholics), I'm all for one. Until I know that: I'm holding off.
be fair. the iPod touch goes for $299, and even that has twice the storage of the iPad. the 399 holds 64 gigs. Be fair in your comparisons. and the MacBook has so much the iPad does not have....starting with flash on the internet, going to garage band, etc.....you can make documents on it, it's faster, and it has SO much more, easily making it worth that extra $169
Ok I know the ipod goes for less too. But you were also comparing the iPad at $1000 or "$800 price jump". I was just showing there isn't huge gaps in their pricing. It's all personal preference on which size people want. I'll be getting the 16gb wifi model. So only $499 for me. I paid more than that for my original iPhone back in 2007 when they first came out. To me, it's worth it.
Saying the iPad is just a big iPod touch is like saying a tiger is just a big kitty cat. (I read this somewhere on Twitter. )
The iPad is a very interesting device, as it will from the start have quite a limited market as is seen in this discussion. I think this will fit in for few people people such as college students like myself, where I can for example keep my MacBook Pro at home and take the iPad to college for notes and internet access instead for convenience, but as the iPad develops I think it will reach out to a larger market because of it's potential for applications. For example, although you can access the internet or read books on the iPod, is it really practical enough to do so? You have the functionality there, but it isn't exactly something you could use regularly. I think the same currently goes for games, where the screen is too small to accommodate virtual buttons or even some direct input based games, like for example dragging objects. The iPod only goes so far until you need something bigger to fully deliver an experience. @Fruho, I think the iPad has the potential to sell on a similar better level than the iPhone and in particular, the iPod Touch, mainly because that a primary focus of purchasing such a device is currently entertainment. Because the iPad can deliver a higher level of entertainment than an iPod Touch can, there would be no point for a new user in paying for such a device when you could buy a cheaper iPod and get an iPad instead. Developers will also definitely drive demand with applications and as we can see there are a lot of developers already committing to games. iPod Touch users will be constantly reminded by the fact that their applications could have better features on the iPad and this will encourage long time iPhone and iPod Touch users in particular (as this device wouldn't have been bought for productivity and communication where it cant be beaten by the iPad) to buy an iPad. It's kind of like buying an iPhone from any other phone, you bought it because you were attracted by it's new features. This time though because it's another Apple product with the same UI and integration, it's even more encouraging. Remember that Apple isn't exactly after the typical user on this forum with this device
I think the iPad is a luxury item meant for those who want to read ebooks, or would like to have a bigger iPod. My next buy will likely be a laptop. And if I have enough money to blow after all of my bills are paid, I might consider buying an iPad.
It's worth it to me. I still have a 1st Gen Touch. Never bothered buying an updated model since the additional features were not enough to warrant spending the money. However, the iPad has really caught my attention--the larger screen size will make a big difference with videos, games, and books. And the no-contract, pay-as-you-go 3G coverage seals the deal as far as I am concerned. And that, my friend, is the reason for most of the negativity toward the iPad in this forum! Fortunately, the world is bigger than Touch Arcade (sorry, arn!) and I am hoping that developers will focus their energy on creating games for people who can afford to spend a little extra for a quality game.
My father told me this: The first generation, will suck. The second, will be better, but suck. The third, is where it will take off! He also said, its like 3D TV's. Sure there awesome, but its gonna take some time to make everyone get one. Why would I buy the first generation when it will have only the features of a giant ipod touch? But, after 1 year or 2, it will be its own category, and it will have its own forums, and review sites, separate from ipod and iphone.
The iPad is a non-essential entertainment device. I can't imagine not owning an iPhone but an iPad I can live without.
I would have gotten one if I could manage my iphone apps with it. I use my macbook for that now, but a lighter portable device would have been better for me. Also if it came with a USB port that would have been great. Right now I just cant justify getting one just for entertainment purposes when my laptop does entertainment plus a whole bunch more.
