Feel free to add card games too.... We play: Dixit King of Tokyo Love Letter Ultimate Werewolf Dice Town Coup Exploding Kittens..... Have not played it yet, but we have it And I have Tsuro of the Seas on order. What are you playing?
Do table top games count as board games? If so, I love playing Armies of Arcana and used to play a whole lot of warhammer and warhammer 40k.
Tabletop Games is probably the better term as it covers more types of games. Anyway. Semantics. Love King of Tokyo. I also have King of New York. Not 100% sure I like that as much as the original, but it's fun. Also love Ticket to Ride (have a bunch of versions of it), Ascension, 7 Wonders, Carcassonne, Flash Point Fire Rescue, Formula D, Ghost Stories, Lords of Waterdeep, Tikal, Twin Tin Bots, etc.
I have played some of the iphone/ipad board games, and I enjoyed them. But I want to love board games, but my experience with a board games group I disliked most of them. Monopoly is still the greatest board game.
The reason I posted this thread is I was at a guy's house yesterday, and he has 2000+ board games... and none of them were the kind you can buy at Walmart.... so I asked - trying to bust his nuggets - where is Monopoly? He said, and I quote "Monopoly is the only game you can play in hell..... $$@! that game!"
Lately I've only been playing Arkham Horror and Carcassonne. Except with my son... then it's Connect 4, Jenga and Operation << This
I play Risk with my kids sometimes. I don't play it with my wife anymore. We played a game about 10 years ago and I beat her. She did not take it well. I'll never do that again. Does anyone remember Go For Broke? It's kind of the opposite of Monopoly. The first one to spend a million dollars wins.
I don't think we ever completed a game of Monopoly when I was a kid. I don't have any desire to play it now, but our youngest son does like it. He plays it with his friends and cousins sometimes. Risk is a classic, but I haven't played it in a long time.
I've replaced risk with my copy of axis and allies. Long live soviet Russia! I also play King of Tokyo, dungeon!, talisman, MTG, zombies!, boss monster, settlers of catan with the Seafarers expansion, pandemic, game of thrones board game, dominion, and ticket to ride. I also got betrayal at house on the hill for cheap but I've never played it. I got my own little collection here, but I'm still looking for a copy of twilight struggle. If anybody has a copy they're willing to sell, chat me up yo. Good thread! Will follow for more badass collections and new ideas to add to mine.
Old boardgamer here, with about two closets worth of games. Kids are 6 and 2 so what do I play? Sushi Go. If I'm lucky. Otherwise FLUXX (without the modifier cards) Memory or Happy Family is about all our daughter can handle. It's a challenge finding games simple enough for her to play and to keep the 2 year old away from the cards/pieces. Otherwise I'd have broken out Heroscape already (as my wife enjoys playing that one!) Favorites would include all sorts of things from Carcassonne to Advanced Civilization to Advanced Squad Leader. Somewhere in a box I have an army of armless/headless TAU. Re: Risk - having played many, many games I can say that it's one of the worst games I've played as it's a long elimination game which usually boils down to two players holding half the world each skirting back and forth until someone gets a string of lucky die rolls. I love the Lord of the Rings version where the game ends when the ring gets to Mordor. Strategery is a great choice for this on iOS. Re: Monopoly - another long elimination game. If you have to play it, play by the official rules with no free parking money and forcing people to buy properties if they can. IMHO I actually like the kids (we've got Disney Princess) sets better as they play a lot faster, (especially due to "go to property, is free if noone owns it" cards) and the color coded castles/etc. make it dead easy to spot who owns what. IMHO a game that plays fast with a similar feel is Hotels (there was a clone of this on iOS, but I can't remember what it is called!)
If you really want to irk a boardgamer, you should be asking about Candyland! I'd take anything over that. It's even worse in it's modern incarnations that cheap out and have spinners - once you're past them, the character cards/spinning a character will take you backwards! Gotta love games that could potentially never end... (FLUXX can do this too, but it usually won't!) Sorry for the wall of text, I'll shut up now.
Lol I thought monopoly wouldn't be too popular. Will look out for that Hotels game, as even I can acknowledge monopoly is flawed.
There's no way Candyland is worse than Shoots & Ladders! Fluxx is a good game to play while waiting for everybody to arrive. It's fun and players can join into the running game as they arrive.
Everyone likes to play Monopoly every once in a while, and I absolutely love it! I don't know if this counts as a board game, but I also really like Banannagrams.
I've played Banangrams, and sure that counts. I guess it might be qualified as a casual tabletop game. I'm not a big fan, but it's just because it is too hectic for my tastes, especially when it comes to word games. Though admittedly I do like Boggle, so not sure why Banangrams doesn't work for me.
Believe it or not, I'd rather play Chutes & Ladders than Candyland. And yes, people can drop right in on a game of FLUXX and have just a good of a chance of winning as the exiting players!
I wouldn't mind a game along the lines of the mechanics of Car Wars but with large ships/fleet battles using 3d space and in space. Something I gather Star Wars Armada is like, but it looks like a model collecting upsell game than anything. Any suggestions for something a bit more self contained?
Well, it's a card game, and we only played 3 games so far, but I kind of like the evil factor of Exploding Kittens.
