Whispers of a Machine is super-immersive, the story reels you in immediatly, the extra abilities (or light RPG elements if you will) are very cool and - same as with the choices - add a very interesting layer to the game. Unfortunately considering its botched release and the rather mediocre end-product (or other disappointments like the still not released SpaceVenture) it somehow also helped with the current decline in public interest again. Luckily there are still cool releases, not as many as before and alas, most for PC. But even in 2019 mobile gamers still get treated to a few adventure jewels like Odysseus Kosmos, Darkestville Castle, Detective Gallo and now Whispers of a Machine. But unfortunately sales for all of those seemed to be rather underwhelming - One just has to take a look at the App Store’s Top Paid or the TA Hot Games list. Other than the remake of the odd classic now and then it’s nearly impossible to ever find even a single Point’n’Click adventure there. Guess the fact that adventures are (luckily) very badly suited for the F2P model is another reason most devs - considering today’s App Store atmosphere - don’t touch them (especially) for mobile anymore. Disney just seems to have decided out of the blue in 2015 to yank both Monkey Island Special Editions from the App Store. Those are two of the greatest adventure games ever made and there wasn‘t even some kind of compatibility issue with newer iOS versions. The games worked fine. And I‘m sure they would have continued to sell enough copies to justify pushing an update once every few years if some incompatibility issues with new iOS versions should have come along. But no, Disney just takes both games from the store for no good reason ... And without any explanation. They just don‘t seem to care about the franchise or its fans (They only cared about Star Wars anyway when purchasing Lucasfilm/LucasArts). That’s why I can‘t for the life of me comprehend why they don’t just sell the Monkey Island rights to Ron Gilbert so he can finish the trilogy as he had always planned (he was only at the helm of part 1 & 2). They’re just letting the franchise collect dust after all ...
