Dungeon Hunter is the best rpg for the iPhone right now. Period. But this may change with the release of Ravensword.
Here's the link to the Elven Chronicles thread -- read up on it and see what you think. http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=27133&highlight=elven+chronicles I didn't get much of a chance to play it (got distracted by other releases), so I can't tell you much about it besides the fact that it looked good in a retro kind of way. You should remember that RPGs are very much a growing category in the App Store. I know that you're looking for something right now, but keep your eyes open for things coming out in the near future, including Across Age (which is supposed to be similar to Chrono Trigger) and Ravensword (which has a bit of Legend of Zelda to it). By the way, if you'd like to try a 3D Zelda style game and don't mind a lot of grinding, I would also give Crusade of Destiny a look. It's pricey, but it does have a lot of content. The reaction around here was mixed: I liked it, but other people haven't.
I liked Dungeon Hunter a lot, but it's very linear and hack-and-slash oriented, so I would definitely not call it the best on the iPlatform by any means -- it's just tough to compare it to something like the Quest or Undercroft (or Zenonia for that matter).
Get the Quest. Seriously it features a HUGE world with over 40 hours of gameplay plus two expansions that each have 30 more hours of gameplay. The only downside is the dated graphics and that it's hard at the beginning. If you can get past those two things then you will love the Quest, there is a lite version and I reccommend you try that out.
Thanks for all your answers and comments. I value them. I have a couple of questions about the games mentioned. Please comment on those. The game zenonia looks cool and seem to be good but i suspects that under the wellpolished outer looks its of bad quality. Is that so? A rpg is something i spend several hours/days on and i dont want to be sitting with buggy crap after spent numerous hours on leveling/grinding. And also i understand that this is a turnbased rpg? Looks really oldschool and the way i like non the less. =) Guardian soul: Also have "the" look i like. What i dont get with this title is if its a turnbased rpg or if its mora zelda:ish.. I like both types but just explain anyway. What scares me is the fact that the game is very small in size what makes me think that it will lack in graphics and sound and maybe "length". Please comment and for you that tried both this and zenonia, compare them. WHICH =) is the better one? Crusade of destiny... Well. I dont think thats what i want now but well... Maybe when i tried some of the other ones.. The Quest: This one really reminds me of the game Elvira/Elviras Quest (dont remind the correct title now) on the atari and amiga for those of you that is old enough to remember. Cool. What i dont understand is if its a rpg where you are a single hero exploring the world or you have a party? Rpg:s where you have a big party where all characters are customizable in many ways can be a bit slow and boring and hard to "overcome" in my opinion, but this is not always true of course.. Anyways - please explain more of the gameplay n this one because by the looks if the game i dont really get that part. Is it real time 3d or is it of the push-forward-arrow-and-character-takes-one-screen-forward-kind-of-type? I understand its hard at beginning and involves a lot of grinding. I have no problem with either but i want to know what im getting myself into first - is it worth spending all the time to get in to the game? At last. If i should choose between theese. WHICH do i want? =) Sorry for the long post, thanks for bearing with me. EDIT: I already got Dungeon Hunter due to all the positive critic at appstore (i believe in the masses lol) but i want to start with something else.
Zenonia, hands down. With retro zelda style graphics, skill trees, about (6?) different towns and dungeons, and a pretty sizable community on the gamevil forums, Zenonia is the way to go (Oh, and the storyline is...okay. Just a few typos )
Dark_Messenger, I strongly advise you to download Lites for Zenonia, The Quest and Undercroft (it is like Eye of the Beholder) and just try them out. In the latter 2 games you can transfer your save from the Lite into the full game, should you like it enough to purchase, so no repetition of the starting area necessary. Don't know about Zenonia - didn't finish the Lite yet, but then, I am a WRPG fan. Zenonia is not turn-based though, but single character hack-and slash. Personally, I also don't like the control scheme, but many do.
None of the games people have recommended are buggy -- in fact, they're all pretty well polished, even those that don't have the graphic pizzazz of Dungeon Hunter. Zenonia is an action RPG (as are most Korean RPGs) so it's not turned based. My main problem with Zenonia was the level of grinding involved. Some of the game mechanics were also kind of annoying (like having to constantly purchase food, repair items, etc). I believe the most recent version toned those down a bit, but I haven't checked it out myself yet. Guardian Soul is very similar to Zenonia, but in the little time I've spent with it, I find the game mechanics to be more interesting. The review at NoDpad said that it was shorter than Zenonia and fairely limited when it comes to exploration. Still, you're talking hours and hours of entertainment. Crusade of Destiny needs a lite version badly -- hopefully they'll have one when you're ready for something like it. The Quest is an old-school, single character, deep exploration RPG. It's technically not turned based, but it might as well be -- the combat is not really that exciting. It's also technically 3D, but you're moving in a 4 sided grid (or, as you describe it, "push-forward-arrow-and-character-takes-one-screen-forward-kind"). It's got a solid story at it's core, and the world it contains is vast. The developer has also come up with a couple of expansion packs for purchase, but even without them, you're talking a game length that can be measured in days, not hours. However, it is very slow at the start, and not very accessible. I would try the lite and see if grabs you -- there's a good chance that it might not. From your comments I think that if you're going for this kind of old-school RPG, you'll find Undercroft a lot more to your liking. It's party based, but Rake in the Grass did a great job in the interface, so it moves fast (a lot faster than The Quest]. It's also more linear, which reduced the potential for exploration, but makes for faster progress and (IMHO) more entertaining gameplay. Hope that helps...
Zenonia- Not turn based. It plays a lot like the early zelda games without as many diff types of weapons. Dungeon Hunter- A lot of fun, but really linear. The Quest- Fun... Until you get stuck and can't get any further... Crusade of Destiny- Has non-professional graphics and a TON of grinding. I like it though. Really fun. Kinda expensive. Hybrid- I really enjoyed the story of this. I didn't enjoy the combat as much as I thought I would, but still great. Verdict- Zenonia wins, all the way. I spent 36 hours on this and wasn't sick of it when I beat it. The funnest, most stylish, open world rpg on the app store. If you want polish and simple gameplay, Dungeon Hunter. If you want an open world 3D game and a lot of gameplay- Crusade of Destiny.
Thanks a lot guys! Then i'll go with Zenonia, Guardian Soul and The Quest in that order. I looked a little at underworld too, but it looked really ugly compared to The Quest so i think i'll pass that one if someone can't convince me that its an really awesome game. =)
Ugh... I wouldn't go for underworlds. I really haven't enjoyed it. Maybe I'm just crazy though! Hehe...
same here but i am trying. Underworlds is good but the controls just don't do it for me. You should definitely check out undercroft as it is very good.
zenonia for console like rpg .. dungeon hunter for the closest diablo clone (action rpg) The quest for a very depth rpg .. undercroft for the .. I don't know .. i'm just enjoying it .. I'm a fan of rpg actually and I have underworld, wolfenstein rpg and inotia but above are my recommendation instead .. oh and yes, Puzzle quest ep 1 and 2 for the greatest puzzle rpg you can find on iphone .. until now, I kept checking for chapter three .. every single day ..
I just stumbled across that. Is it any good? Looks really neat, though oldschool but thats fine if the game-mechanics and story etc are good. Gives me a little suikoden-feeling?? Btw.. How's the Arvale-games? I saw thoose to and they had gotten quite nice reviews but looked kinda ugly and primitive. Are they any good?? Man.... =)
Most important question: what's your favourite type of RPG? Western RPG and Asian RPG are very different. Edit: Arvale is extremely boring and extremely easy. It's always one-on-one turn-based combat, it gets silly after a few battles.
Hello. I dont really know. I guess that i have played more of the Japanese/Korean-style rpg:s but i'm defenatly not scared of trying others. I guess that i have i thing for FF/Suikoden type of rpg:s if that says anything. The main thing is that i want a fun and engaging (can you say so? Lol) game. The game should not be to ugly either because then i tend to just annoy me of that and cannot enjoy the game to its fullest. Old charming graphic is ok but not cheap tacky. Lol you get the point i hope. EDIT: Arvale is off the list.
I didn't see anyone mention Vay. If I missed it sorry. Vay is the only RPG game that I have played all the way through twice on my iphone. Well worth every penny. It reminds me of a lunar style RPG. I would say that IMO is the best of the best.
