Hey I have been looking at Sketchbook Mobile and Brushes and can't decide which to get. Anyone have both and can compare? Thanks.
I haven't tried Sketchbook Mobile but I have Brushes and the only thing holding me back is my art skills, so unless you're a total pro at art already I think either one would fully cater to your needs.
Yeah, not sure about Sketchbook, but Brushes is the best painting/drawing app in the store. Very quick and responsive, fast workflow, layers with full merging and transparency, awesome brush types, and an easy color palatte with opacity controls. Literally anything as possible. Check out the Brushes flickr group, a bunch of us post our work. Best part is if you have a Mac, you can get the Brushes Viewer app for free. This allows you to export the .brushes file to you computer, and the program can re-export the file as .tiff or .jpeg up to 6x the original resolution. It really looks great. You can also export a quicktime file which replays all your strokes and shows your painting come to life. A dream app for any artist.
As an owner of all three apps, I'm going to respectfully disagree with Nausicaa. I feel that each app has definitive pros and cons and there currently isn't a clear winner for all types of users. The developers of Brushes and Layers seem to be in active competition and their feature sets and workflow are astonishingly similar. So much so that I'd say that the choice of which one to use really depends on which of the tiny variations in UI you prefer. That said, Layers has several features that Brushes currently doesn't-- the ability to export to a layered Photoshop .psd file, two choices of canvas size: 320x480 or 512x512, and several more brush types. If those matter to you, then Layers is the clear winner. Now, Autodesk SketchBook is a completely different beast and seems to be attempting to position itself as a serious drawing app. It offers everything the other two apps do (minus Layer's PSD export feature) along with a several additional features and even larger canvas sizes if you're running on a 3GS or 3rd Gen iPod Touch. In particular: + A wide selection of brush behaviors and the ability to customize individual behaviors to your heart's content + The ability to actively mirror your brush strokes (gimmicky sure but it has uses) + Both color swatch picker and color wheel, plus the ability to save custom swatches + A robust help system The downside? The UI isn't quite as intuitive or responsive (on my 3G at least), but this is also version 1.0 so I'm looking forward to seeing the app evolve.
