Exactly, I can't understand how some people say 5$ is a steep price for a quality game. It's no wonder devs go free to play, but I just can't support a business model I don't agree with. There are exceptions, of course, and in those cases, I'm happy to comply.
I'm 100% with you there. I see the line at Starbucks insanely long each day (assuming most are paying at least $5...I too do that lol), so why on earth do people get so hesitant to pay $5 for a game? Or is it difficult for those of us who spend hours each day on an iOS gaming site to comprehend, but to the average consumer it actually makes sense NOT to spend $5 on a game?
You know, it's funny because that kind of is the question that set off this whole argument, if you check the first page of the thread. I don't know why mobile games aren't deemed worthy, but I really hope that will change in the future. It's ultimately on the hands of the consumer though, so I can see why people aren't too optimistic about the future.
I started this thread to talk about the possibility of AAA titles, regardless of pay model. and honestly all points have been covered at this point, now it's devolved into F2P bashing. Me personally the pay model is fine, it works, I just wanted to see that used on mobile through AAA titles, be they shooters, CCG or MOBAs
Likewise, I wanna pay money for better games where are cool AAA games for 6S Plus? i still want the golden years of iOS back, i really had good games in 2009 when i had my 3GS.
I'm all in for AAA games with premium prices, like XCOM, KOTOR, and MHFU for iOS. But most of these AAA games are ports. Hope they make one for iOS from the ground up, that is "deep" in gameplay and customization, utilizes all of the iOS device's hardware and software capabilities to the max like Metal, and is premium.
And Space Marshals. And Battleheart Legacy. And Wayward Souls. And Oceanhorn. And Heroes & Castles 2. And Chaos Rings. And AirAttack 2. And Crashlands. And imma stop there.
Many of those, while great, probably don't push te device capacity very far. That's what he meant, I assume.
Well i'm thinking of something like Infinity blade 3 graphics that is open world like Skyrim with full customization and a great story, not on rails, but free roam
I think you have to be realistic about the economics of developing games. Ports are relatively inexpensive to produce compared to developing all new titles with all the hardware and software capabilities you might want, so it makes since that most of the good AAA, premium titles on iOS are ports. Not saying that as a bad thing necessarily. Looking at the 33 games I have on my iPad, only 2 aren't ports or system emulators like RetroArch and Provenance. Though, I just wish some publisher would have the guts to port a game like Skyrim (I'll take Morrowind, Bethesda, really I would), charge $30-$40 for it, and see what happens.
I think the biggest barrier to getting those types of games on mobile (financial and market situations aside) is battery life. What's the good of having a full Skyrim game on your phone if it kills your entire battery in a matter of minutes? It's such a different ball game when there's a console or PC that's constantly plugged into a wall, then you can go nuts maxing out the hardware capabilities. Doing something similar on a tiny device, even an iPad Pro, just isn't practical. Even the new Assassin's Creed game, which I absolutely love and am playing constantly, just chews through my battery. It's a great looking game IMO but it's far from a graphical showpiece or anything, and even still it's taxing on the battery. I'd be very hesitant to play it while I'm truly out and about for fear I might kill of my battery when I need my phone for something else, so even though the game itself is super conducive to mobile play I mostly play at home while I'm plugged in, which is a shame.
Ah yes if only we could go back to the glory days of endlessly arguing over whether or not Canabalt was worth $3.
Reading through that old thread, you could literally replace Canabalt with Badlands 2 and NOTHING else would need to be changed. Aside from it being from 2008, the comments are all still the same. Some agreeing...with most saying SMH.
